How to make yourself into a director

Watching the movie made me take for granted traditional film editing. Although the dialogue and character development was better than the Manson Family Vacation (which I admittedly stopped after 20 minutes), the cinematography and editing was way off.

There were too many camera angles for simple dialogue. Excessive use of portrait shot during said dialogue scenes, when it should have been limited to conclusive shots rather than delivery of a character's buildup.

Just to put in other words: the director used dialogue shots that cut off a antagonist of the scene just to show a reaction. It wasn't done with a shot of both actors, as would have been preferred, but a simple cut away from one to the other. That completely cuts off viewer's association with the person giving their best, and transfers your attention to the person just reacting with a few face gestures.

I saw lots of potential but the the director just got me off the movie. He clearly likes to make dialogue heavy movies, but for that he should just watch some more Tarantino movies and applies the techniques. Let the actors play for the camera and stop cutting them off.
