The "I like your boots" part in the trailer

Keep in mind I haven't seen the movie, but in the trailer, that part makes absolutely no sense. Why would a closeted gay guy say that? Even if he was openly gay, people generally don't say things like that to strangers.

At first I thought it was going to be a joke. Here's how I thought it would go:

Simon narrating: So, I'm just like you, except I have one huge-ass secret.

Simon to gardener: Hey, I like your boots. I said I like your boots. Goodbye.

Simon narrating: I'm a superhero.
