Why do Americans love cults and MLM ?!

After watching this movie I was amazed and worried. Since I moved to US I have seen a lot of skeptical schemes of making money. It has been almost impossible to go a month without someone calling to say that I won something or asking if I was interested in investing money with 300% ROI . Surprisingly I have found more scams here than in my homeland, Brazil.

SOooo, I would like to ask to anyone that lives in US, is there any explanation for so many scams in US ?

Last, because I live in Utah, I have found some odd aspects between the documentary and the LDS church. To give a little explanation, that religion is a cult but many things that are thought there are present in the movie, the missionaries, for example, are great salesman like Tony Robbins.
