Why did Claire say she was probably going to jail anyway?

At the very end, while telling the old woman that she wasn't going to help her end her life, Claire says, "...it's not about getting caught -- I'm probably going to jail anyway..".

Wait. What???!

The intercuts and flashbacks with the main characters making scary eyes at one another did Nothing to explain what Claire was banging on about and if they meant that to be a cliffhanger, it was a particularly Awful one.

Anyone have an explanation?

Are you for real?

The entire family got caught red-handed and were granted bailed after being charged for perversion of justice. She says that because it's likely they'll all end up in prison.

Don't forget, Bill confessed to the killing but the entire family colluded in the cover-up.

I am for "for real"

That was lost in the huge reveal of the dad being a psychopathic murderer, the detective being a criminal and fugitive from justice, and each character having some huge misunderstanding and flawed perspective of the world and all the people around them, so Yeah, that bit about Claire, THE ONLY ONE WHO REFUSED TO TAKE PART in all the criminal acts other than SECRETLY dumping the knife into the river, was not clear.

You weren't the only one lost with that line, I just watched it and ended up googling to find out what she meant by it. It was certainly poorly put, especially given the surrounding montages of 'bad' guys locked up, 'good' guys getting on with life, being friends, all happily ever after - then throw in that line. I was waiting for some twist coming with something she'd done, and it never did.

On the whole though, one of BBC's better series, if a little OTT and lacking realism in places (eg going to arrest a murder suspect and just letting him wander off on his own, in a farmhouse with guns in it).

Thank you.

And exactly, the montage with all the other family members getting on with life was the most confusing part as it invalidated the line and I too kept waiting for a twist to come because of it.
