Nailed it!!!

S1/E6 (Greed is Good) is such a depressing episode. But they nailed numerous things regarding the "80's. The excess was highlighted from all parts of the Decade including Politics, insider trading on Wall street, TV evangelists, and excess shopping on credit. They did leave out the excess of pop culture including Movies, TV programing and the music industry.

However, they did manage to leave out completely the excess of available jobs especially in the early '80's after Reagan took control of and sent freedom to industry by fixing the Carter era government regulations and encouraged the boom in the first place.

How did you watch this? Instead of The Eighties, Greed is Good on CNN at 9 last night I got more Anderson Cooper (which is what I keep getting on every DVR for "The Eighties" episodes except The Reagan Revolution and Tear Down This Wall. How did you get to see the episode? Please help... I'd like to watch this show.

reply

I'm on central time and I watched the Greed is Good episode at 8 pm last night. Cooper was on from 7 to 8.

The programing is all messed up. I'm still trying to get "Tear down this wall". Just keep recording again and again. It figures CNN would mess something up. They have been doing it with Anthony Bourdain as well. You never know if you're going to get it or not.

Beginning to wonder if it is Comcast and the DVR... fast forwarded to the DVR-ed "The Eighties" which started with Anderson Cooper and about 45 minutes in started showing The Eighties episode. It did this with the Race to the Whitehouse episodes, too. I would only get half of the show recorded... it's like the timer is off on the DVR for CNN...??

reply

It was a decent episode.....but they talked about the '87 Wall Street crash without pointing out the market recovered in about a year and a half. (Going into the 80's, there were brokers who thought the DOW would never stay consistently above 1000.....but by the end of the decade, it was consistently at twice that.) They also tried to pin the S&L crisis on just one or two factors when it was a variety of things.

It's been messed up since Prince passed away. The irony.

reply

Prince REALLY? Two weeks ago. It's been messed up a lot longer than that. Sheesh.

I finally got to see "Tear down this wall". I found it very encouraging. Unlike the "Greed is good" episode.

At the time I was not a big Reagan fan. I was still young and dumb. I voted for him in 1980 though because I was smart enough to know that another Carter (aka O'Commie phase I) would be a bad thing. Reagan's election was enough for me to join the US Navy and for the next 24 years after that I am very glad I did. That's something I NEVER would have done had Carter been re-elected.

The greatest thing he did was to point out to the world that Communism doesn't work. It never has and never will. Unfortunately, about 1/3 of the people right here in the United States are trying with all their might to pursue it again. We've already "elected" one twice and are looking to do it again. Pretty sad if you ask me.

It was normal before he passed on. The DVR recorded all 3 of the episodes before he passed.

Clark's destiny = Superman, LL &LL.

If you say so. However, my DVR wasn't notified. Neither were the DVR's of other people that mentioned the problem in late April in another thread.

Good for you. There are at least 3 other people besides me that didn't. Here's the link if you're too lazy to look it up:

It's not that serious. I said I seen the first 3 episodes. The DVR recorded those 3 episodes without issues.

Clark's destiny = Superman, LL &LL.

reply

Have you seen the recording of the Aids episode? I've recorded some episodes only to play them and see that even though it says the name of the episode it is some completely different program. From what I recall from on this message board, nobody has ever seen the Aids episode yet.

reply

Looks like were missing "Video Killed the Radio Star". Instead we get another hour of wall to wall coverage of that plane crash Paris/Cairo. They even have the Hildabeast flapping her know nothing former Sec/State gums for a good 20 minutes. If I didn't need another reason for not watching CNN that's it.

Hey simba122504 did you get that one?

I LOVED this episode! Now that CNN finally decided to air it.

The MTV brought me back so many years. Good and bad. It was refreshing to get to go back a little and remember. All those "one hit wonders" etc.

After 1984 things with music changed at all levels. So aside from a very few artists there wasn't much to go with. Van Halen was good with The Red Rocker/Sammy Hagar lead and a very brief Guns and Roses top run. Otherwise even the "Icons" showed us a lot of hits and misses. Too many attempts to get on MTV changed everybody.

No doubt there was good stuff but it wasn't the late '70's when Rock and Roll really made another big drive. Ever notice that on "Classic Rock" radio for the most part 1984 is where they stop.
