Real Annabelle girls soul

Okay here is something kind of confusing. When the nun is talking to the mother in bed about the dead girl( the real Annabelle) the nun says something about her soul now being in heaven and the mom says I wish that were true? As far as we know the demon never took the real Annabelle soul when she was alive. The little girl died and the demon was disguising itself as the little girl Annabelle to her parents then to Janice before it revealed itself to all. Why would the mother think her daughter's soul was damned? Also I got the impression the doll itself was nothing but a doll when the girl was alive. The notes at the beginning when Annabelle was alive were from the little girl herself. The doll only became possessed after the demon posing as the little girl asked to come into it. Apparently with demons they need permission from humans to enter something sometimes. I got the impression reading somewhere that some thought the doll was always possessed by a demon but I think that only happened after the parents opened themselves up to everything and gave the demon permission not knowing what it was of course.
