TV series or Mini Series

Some are calling Victoria an 8 part mini series but IMDb says:

TV series 2016-

So does anyone know if it will be an 8 part mini series or a new on going TV show?

reply

I read it was to follow the finale of 'Downton Abbey' as a summer mini-series.

All titles submitted to IMDb must comply with IMDb's submission guidelines on title types:-

http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?titletypes

IMDb's guidelines as to whether a television programme should be classed as a TV Series, TV Mini-Series or even a TV Movie are open to interpretation by contributors.

As it stands at the moment "Victoria" meets all of the criteria to be classed as a TV Series.
- Originally produced for release on television. Check
- Initial release/premiere on television. Check
- Total running time is 60 minutes or less per episode excluding commercials. Check
- Shown in 4 or more episodes. Check.
- Shown in 1 or more seasons/series/years. Check.

It is unusual to know if a TV Series will run for more than one season/series before S1 EP1 has been broadcast.

It could have been submitted as a TV Mini-Series. The "Shown in how many parts/episodes" for a mini-series is NORMALLY 2 to 4. Which is where interpretation comes in. Is this an abnormally long TV Mini-Series?

At the moment it is not a problem and I personally cannot see any reason to alter the title type for this programme.

Thankfully, data submitted to IMDb can be edited if the need arises.

Surely the overriding criterion on which series/mini-series is judged should be whether it is an ongoing story, spread over many episodes (serial or mini-series), or whether it's lots of separate self-contained stories, featuring some recurring characters (series). By that criterion, Victoria a mini-series.

Ideally we need a third category for dramas like BBC's "Play For Today" where totally separate plays (totally self-contained stories with no common characters/setting) are shown in a regular weekly slot under a common umbrella title. That's at the opposite end of the spectrum (in terms of continuity of story) from mini-series.

Personally I would say a mini-series has a finite story arc and is irrevocably concluded by the end of one season.

Most TV series don't have self-contained stories anymore but have an ongoing story arc per season.

It is called Victoria and not Young Victoria. It could last 60 years.

It's that man again!!

Hope not!!!

If it runs long enough maybe they'll get to the time when Victoria established the Torchwood Institute :-).
