He was such an obvious schemer and manipulator with his own interests as high priorities. Once ascended to the throne, why didn't Victoria have him sent away?
Was it merely his close (bordering on scandalous) relationship with Victoria's mother that kept her from doing this, or was there some other reason she tolerated his meddling for so long?
In reality, Conroy had little or no influence over Victoria after her accession. She loathed him, and would not accept either his wife or daughter among her ladies. She allowed him to continue to serve her mother as the Duchess' comptroller, perhaps because there were rumors of an affair, and dismissing him completely would have fueled those rumors. Victoria finally did bribe him with an Irish peerage to get him to leave, and he disappears from history. He would have had nothing like the run of the palace as described in the current series.
Conroy treated Victoria abominably when she was a princess, and expected to dominate her as queen. He was lucky she didn't have him arrested and thrown into the Tower, but she was worried about her mother's reputation.
She disregarded him from the moment of her acension. He was not a part of her life after that. What they are showing is for drama, but all of his scheming took place before she was queen and all came to nothing.
