It is my new Downton Abbey

Watching the debut of Victoria on PBS..brilliant casting and great writing. I am throughly enjoying this debut episode

"I wonder if you wonder"

I enjoyed it a lot, too. It looks gorgeous and I'm a big Rufus Sewell fan.

reply

yes, i found it more enjoyable than expected. I wasn't too sure about this show, but after the first episode, it does appear to be promising.

Kim, I hope you've also found 'Poldark'. Season Three comes back after Season One of Victoria. I almost prefer it to Downton Abbey.

reply

The Crown became my Downton Abbey successor.

reply

I found it completely engrossing.

That film score really makes a difference.

I adore Rufus Sewell so I'm giving this a chance but it feels like they're trying a little too obviously to be Downtown Abbey

reply

Yep!

It's a costume soap. The funny thing is that Victoria's real life was as far from a costume soap as lives get.

What it was, in fact, was the life of the woman who almost literally ruled the world for most of her reign. She established the widest ranging empire the world has ever known.

That's what interests me, really. Her grandchildren ruled much of Europe, India, and Russia, along with other colonies like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other assorted islands and places.

In fact, you could run a direct line from their kind of autocracy to the one we're experiencing now in a bizarre, funhouse mirror kind of way, though.

I would like to see more originality in their depiction of the dynamic between Conroy, Victoria and her mother. It's like re-watching the same storyline in The Young Victoria with Emily Blunt.
But I suppose that's the conventional wisdom among historians.

reply

I am not sure there is all that much room for originality when you are depicting history. I know this series has taken some liberties with order of things and did create the crush on Melbourne, but what can you do with the Conroy story line ? They show it much as it was, except for his influence extending into her reign.
