Another racist TV show with no representation from the minorities...

Although London is a multicultural city with a brown muslim mayor....These TV shows like Downtown Abbey,War and Peace, Crown and now this Victoria keep marginalizing the black, trans, Muslims and Asians....

reply

You are joking, right?

reply

I wonder what London's demographics were in 1840? Or do you think the Victorian era is now?

reply

You need to read some History Books

reply

Sometimes you just have to accept that there isn't a decent role for people who aren't white. This show depicts a certain time, a certain way of life.

If it offends, don't watch it.

What was the demographic in London in those times, anyway? I've never seen a period film where any darker skinned people are present, even as servants.

Simon Schama's book "Rough Crossings" tells the story of blacks who fought for the Crown and their struggles after the American Revolutionary War. There were many minorities in London from the 1750s onward: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrival_of_black_immigrants_in_London

In 1764 The Gentleman's Magazine reported that there was 'supposed to be near 20,000 Negroe servants'...The Blacks in London lived among the whites in areas of Mile End, Stepney, Paddington and St Giles. The majority of these people did not live as slaves, but as servants to wealthy whites.

This business has gone far enough...

reply

Yes because there were Trans people in Victoria's time. You so smart.

reply

Forgetting Demographics of London at the time. You'd have to understand that anyone not German or British probably wasn't let near the Queen. This was standard practice back then. It wasn't until the late 1880's where Queen Victoria hired two Indian men to serve as waiters and other functions, that there was anyone of any other type ethnicity anywhere near her, and even then, most of her family, and staff were appalled that these two were allowed so close to the Queen. One gentleman by the name of Abdul Karim, even advised her on Indian affairs and taught her basic Hindustani. But this show is about the early years into her Reign. So guess what? Your Presentism antics don't work with how things were back in the day.

Hi DeltaFlotFan,

When you have a moment, please Google Sara Forbes Bonetta, an African girl who became Queen Victoria's goddaughter around 1850. The late Walter Dean Meyers wrote a well-received Young Adult novel about Sara and though she died early, there is information about her.

Digitadiva,

Thank you for the information. I was not aware of her in my readings about Victoria. Nice catch.

reply

Thanks, DeltaFlotFan. It will be interesting if the producers develop this relationship in the future.

Oh, for Pete's sake, don't try to make a meal on a morsel! This girl was one of THOUSANDS of Queen Victoria's "goddaughters." She rarely actually met any of them, but sent a check and a note (written by a lady in waiting).

The claim that Victoria thought she was "of high intelligence" is only a claim. It was not unusual for Victoria to note that ALL young girls she was told about were judged (by her) to be "such a clever girl."

To pretend that Victoria was more than she was is UNFAIR to her. She was enough as she was, there is NO POINT in trying to make her to be "color blind," because she was not. In fact, judging by the ranting of some modern blacks, it is an unheard of condition for anyone, even now, more than 150 years later.

Again, Victoria had THOUSANDS of "goddaughters." Most were British, many were German, many were Scandinavian, and some were American, Dutch, Russian and Spanish. A few were Chinese. And, this ONE was "African" and lived (mostly) in Nigeria and died at age 37 in Nigeria. Do not try to rewrite history just because it fits an agenda. Pretense and falsity cheapens the narrative.

Camargue, I replied to another poster who wrote that Victorian never saw people of color. I made a reference to Sara Forbes Bonetta and the poster thanked me. Your quotes referring to Sara Forbes Bonetta are yours, not mine. I assume you them culled from Wikipedia since you probably never heard of her before I mentioned her on this board.

By the way, I never said Victoria was color blind. I never suggested that dear Vickie was a swell gal who liked hip hop, hung out in the hood, and joined Black Lives Matter movement. I'm aware of the racist views of the period and wasn't trying to rewrite history.

reply

Nice to see you flying your racism flag high.

I swear I see a similar post for just about every show. This is a period drama, whites were the majority and that's what they are showing. Not too difficult to figure out except for those who want to scream racist around every corner. SMH.

"Vulgarity is no substitute for wit".

One good thing about IMDb shutting down is I never have to see a topic like this again.

I never noticed the color of the mayor's skin; he looks white to me. Muslim should be capitalized, but then, I'm a conservative and respect is important to me. As is TRUTH and HONESTY!

Just because a "period piece" is true to form, does NOT mean it "marginalizes" anything. If there were NO BLACKS and NO ASIANS and NO MUSLIMS, that is not anyone's problem. If a movie was made about sub-Saharan Africa at this time, HOW MANY WHITES, ASIANS, and MUSLIMS would be there? If a movie about China was made about that time, HOW MANY WHITES, BLACKS, AND MUSLIMS would be there?

In fact, this is a silly post. And, how do you show "trans?" We have not yet degraded ourselves to where we have our genitals on display, so that weirdos know who to salute.

[Something dressed in a dress, make-up, and high heels with a male (blank) hanging out is ONLY important to FREAKS! Likewise, something dressed in male trousers, a plaid-shirt, and lumberjack boots, with a female (blankette) showing, is ONLY important to FREAKS!]
