Refugees?

It should be remembered that those who attempt to enter Australia by sea from Indonesia are no longer seeking asylum. They already have asylum in Indonesia. They are coming to Australia for a better standard of living and better prospects for their family. I don't necessarily blame them for that, but by taking that next step they forfeit their refugee status and become illegal immigrants.

Having said that, the manner in which the camps are managed is deplorable, inhumane and inexcusable. The offshore camps are arguably an unfortunate necessity, but there needs to be a thorough overhaul in the way they are run.

I noticed that too. They are clearly not refugees. I get that they want to move to a rich country but they can move to Cambodja where they are 100% free. That means they are de facto not refugees. Do I feel sorry for them? Sure. But they are not running from anything. They are running towards a rich country.

There is nothing in international law to say that refugees must claim asylum in the first country they reach.
