Some of us would argue he made the deal with HIMSELF, and psychologically made himself sick / brain let body allow lots of lingering, potential issues to come to a head a decade or two before they normally would.
Even when something is psychosomatic (which I wouldn't call this), that person is still sick with whatever, they aren't faking it. The brain can do AMAZING things in controlling the body. Tibetan monks can raise their body temperature to prevent freezing when out in the Himalayas; others can sing CHORDS, not just notes.
The most astounding, and devastating IMO, was the Buddhist monk, Thich Quang Duc, who self-immolated himself in 1963 to protest religious repression in South Vietnam.
