Why does this franchise make a billion with each movie?

The first two DisMe movies had a decent Metascore and Imdb rating, but the Gru movies both have a Metascore of 65. I watched some trailers and they are stupid compared to most Disney/Pixar movies.

Idiocracy

Because Minions are awesome and have now become a multibillion dollar corporation.

Pierre Coffin is giving the public what they want and the public loves minions.

All three Despicable Me movies and the Minions movie were a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to this. Have been done with Pixar for awhile. Their releases just don't do much for me the way they used to.

Fun is the right word to describe this great IP. More of these Minion animations the better.

Agreed. Same here. The most of the recent Pixar movies are atrocious. They used to make such fun and enjoyable movies and ones that would make you want to go see a second time around or even better multiple viewings. Now just like others I know, could not care less. I even used to notice many older folks watch them too, now it is less and less.

It sells to kids and there are a lot of them to be entertained.

Basically, while not as well done, these fill the role Warner Bros and Tom & Jerry etc. cartoons used to have in our society.

Beyond that;
1) These are hardly the only movies in history, or even right now (e.g. the Jurassic Worlds) to be more popular with audiences than critics.
2) Because the primary appeal is visual humour, it travels really well to other countries. They're also unlikely to offend many people
3) Huge brand recognition and public awareness, due to all the merchandising
4) Huge and inescapable marketing campaigns. My understanding is that Illumination spend much less than other studios on the animation but spend more on marketing.
5) This might sound ridiculous given 3 and 4, but they have showed enough restraint with spin-offs and cash-ins to make the films still feel like events. Dreamworks tarnished some of their brands by doing TV series and specials, so when the later Kung-Fu Pandas and Dragon films came out, kids could get a similar experience for free at home. Illumination and/or Universal have avoided doing a Minions TV series even though it seems like the obvious thing to do, so kids (and adults) who are into these characters will be more excited when a new film comes out.

reply

Pretty good explanations. I'm not in the youngest age group anymore to assess this myself. However kids today will watch Looney Tunes as a last option. The long-running characters and animation if developed would only appeal in a nostalgic sense because it can't escape feeling old.

Then you see a competitor movie like Paws of Fury, for slightly older kid audiences. Despite the lack of awareness or advertising it's really less sublime humor than Minions. The appeal towards the Kung-fu panda fan crowd seems amiss, while its technique in stylizing the cartoon personas after voice actors' also seems less of a draw.

True. I was flabbergasted after reading the following:

Deadline Hollywood reported Universal spent $285 million on promotion and tie-ins for the film, the biggest-ever campaign for a Despicable Me film.

That's three times the film's budget spent on marketing.

because its not disney and its steve carell..

Also as far as I can tell they are just trying to have fun and aren’t trying to force identity politics or some kind of message down our throats like Disney does. That and the fact that the jokes are funny and the Minions are a fairly original idea. Hell they created a whole language for them.

Just shows how idiotic people are now. I just don't understand how this is enjoyable at all.

reply

Cause its funny and its brighten your day. So if your life is full of hate and depression .... then this movie isnt made for you.

reply

Maybe I have a different standard for humor. No reason to tell me how my life is when you don't know me. I just don't find this stuff funny. I think it is idiotic, but if you enjoy it good for you, but I just don't get how it is funny.
