Why was Louis such a dick to Marc?

He constantly tried to ask him the most stupid questions at the worst possible moment. What was he trying to accomplish ?

reply

He was trying to accomplish a thorough insight into Scientology.
And as he says in the film - Marc had done to plenty of other people what was now being done to him.

reply

its marty, not marc
marty had done things to marc
doesnt really give us insight into the scions to do the job of the scions in exposing marty...who still allegedly believes in almost everything lrh
the fact is, what marty attempted to do was also attempted back in the 70s
there were a few "indy" scion groups....the cult crushed them
but while they didnt charge what the cult did...they still charged and they still were bilking people out of their money, chasing something that didnt exist
emeters are a joke. body thetans come from the mind of an evil scifi scribe.etc

parts of the doc gave me the willies, because it almost seemed that louis was doing the bidding of the scions
the mighty midget didnt hijack the cult...it has been this way since its early beginnings
the thing is, he wasnt supposed to take over leadership. hubbard had chosen three other people...but all three are total dorks, so it was rather ez for a psycho like the midget to push them aside

he is credited as "Marc Headley" are you sure his name was Marty?

reply

I think they're talking about Marty Rathbun, the ex-Inspector General of Scientology, who ran the "squirreling session" with the actors.

Marty seemed like a total prick and an oversensitive one to add.
But yeah, Luis seemed to be lost as to what ask and not to ask at most times, but similarly to how asking a criminal about his past is not dickish it is not to here.
Those people need to take responsibility and deal with it, and have to be faced with what they have done.
There is always this hilariously idiotic idea that doing time or trying better somehow makes the action of past dissapear, if anything Louis was soft on that guy.
We learned almost nothing about what exactly he did when he was in the cult.

And the last question was hilarious, he did teh same exact thing to other people but now is sad when its done to him and we are to feel bad for him? *beep* that guy.

It says a lot that we learn almost nothing about him yet the one or two things we do already make me dislike the guy. I just know hes the type of person i would get into a fight 5 minutes into a conversation.

You can tell Marty was going through some stuff, because he's now stopped criticizing the church and is continuing to try to make his own independent Scientology, so he clearly still believes in the doctrine and just disagrees with some of the practices.

It felt like we were watching him slowly come apart during the movie. In Going Clear earlier that year he was 100% against the church. Throughout this movie he slowly starts to change. By August of 2016 he had re-declared himself a Scientologist and a lot of his blog is now currently dedicated to critiquing people he used to be friends with like Tony Ortega and Mark Rinder.

So I don't know what's going on with Marty right now. I think it's weird that he STILL believes in Scientology even after all he's been through. And why did he get so upset at Louis when the actors stood up and pretended to clap for LRH? He's already jumping to conclusions that these kids are joining a cult, then why go back to one?

reply

My guess is that since he is a stupid egoistical psychopath?
And im not joking here, the guy seems like the worst kind of scum you will find on the streets, no morals, no conscience no intelligence.

Learning he got back into it dosnt surprise me, we get to know little about him and nothing we do learn is good, every new thing puts him in a worse light than the last one.
Again, Luis was too soft on him, maybe even afraid of him.
Maybe now that he knows inner workings of a cult he wants to start one? Dont know, dont care.
Hope he gets hit by a car.

reply

I don't think Marty is that bad, there are almost no completely black or white people, everyone is a shade of gray. Marty's may be a little darker, but he was also in a high-ranking position of a cult for decades that enforced that kind of behavior and mentality so it's hard to know if Marty would have even been like this had he never joined Scientology.

I don't think he's perfect by any means, but certainly not a stupid, egotistical psychopath. Maybe just the stupid part.

Louis just does that to get an interesting bit of conversation/footage going. He'll make you angry to show another side of you. I think here he was grasping at straws, because he wasn't let into the organization the way he usually gets. He was doing whatever just to have something in the can worth making a movie out of.

reply

Louis was making a reasonable point to be fair.

reply

Louis does passive aggressive so well. His seemingly innocent, inane and stupid questions are often pitched to provoke, annoy and get under the skin. The reaction being the thing Louis is after rather than an answer to a question.

reply

Well said. The same is also true of those long silences of his. His seeming cluelessness disarms people and draws them out.

reply

Yeah, Louis has always done that,

It reminds me, oddly, of Huell Howser.
