Scorsese has no time for Marvel.. but loves Mother!

In an essay for The Hollywood Reporter, Martin Scorsese said, "It was so tactile, so beautifully staged and acted—the subjective camera and the POV reverse angles, always in motion ... the sound design, which comes at the viewer from around corners and leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare ... the unfolding of the story, which very gradually becomes more and more upsetting as the film goes forward. The horror, the dark comedy, the biblical elements, the cautionary fable—they're all there, but they're elements in the total experience, which engulfs the characters and the viewers along with them. Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it."

I thought it was an okay film and understand why Scorsese would appreciate this movie, there's a lot to like in it for cinephiles, it's well shot and has lots of symbolism and the like. But Marvel? Drab cinematography, tons of CGI, green screens, stock soundtrack etc, it's every cinephiles nightmare.

Marvel movies run hot and cold for me. I do like a good number of them, but then there are those Marvel films that I just can't stand. I know what Scorsese is saying, but he really shouldn't throw all Marvel movies into the same bin.

Scorsese's opinion holds a lot of weight. That is a huge complement coming from what many would consider the greatest director of the last half century or so.

MS might have liked this movie more than I did. It's an intriguing film but I could summarize the movie in one or two sentences. Groundhog Day meets Rosemary's Baby then put these two movies on a roller coaster ride then have a tornado destroy the roller coaster.

That's pretty much Mother! in a nut-shell. I thought it was a very good film but it's all over the place. Usually films like this are a bit of turn-off for me but I think it worked really well this time. Probably because Aronofsky is a terrific directer. It's amazing how the entire movie takes place in the house without any change in location. Aronofsky was able to get maximum use out of this one set.

From a film-making point of view, it's quite an achievement. But DA is not why I decided to watch this movie. I recently saw a list of the top 50 most controversial films of all-time. I was surprised to see this on the list. So, I had to check it out. And yeah, I can see why it made the list, one scene in this film is quite shocking. Right now Mother! is sitting at #44 on this list. I am surprised The Neon Demon is not on this list though. I seem to recall people walking out on it at the Cannes film festival. And like Mother!, it has some very wicked things in it.

That being said, I am going to have to disagree with those that say Jennifer Lawrence was not good in this. She was very good and I don't care what the razzies say or anyone else. She was the star of the show for sure. Bardem is starting to kind of annoy me though. His acting style is so sappy. It almost looks like he's about to burst out laughing in every scene. Michelle Pfeiffer was surprisingly good as well.

At any rate, I'll give it a 7.5 out of 10. Top notch horror film in my view.
