Good but not as much as original

This version follows the same beats as the original. I found it entertaining enough, but the original did a better job of portraying the brutality of their situation.

For prisoners doing hard labour in the jungle, these prisoners were oddly clean. Even their clothes were weirdly clean. Both the leads look fresh faced well into their stint. In the original everyone looked grimy and sweaty in keeping with hard labour in a jungle.

Hunnam here emerges from two stints of long solitary confinement looking none the less for wear except for a bit of grey hair. (Although I did note that he pulled a Christian Bale with the weight loss). In the original, the sight of an aged and shuffling Steve McQueen -- missing some of his teeth -- emerging after five years of solitary was a shock, and is probably a more realistic depiction of the effects of his prolonged confinement.

I was also distracted by their curiously modern way of speaking and the lack of consistent French accents.

Aside from these minor complaints this movie was fine for what it was.
