OT:the killing joke/the future of dc animation/small horses

I have high expectations.

this will be another adaptation I have wanted for a long time, the others including the dark knight returns (fav comic movie of all time), batman year one and fllashpoint (yes, I liked the comic)

do you think I am wrong to get my hopes up?

What adaptations do you want in the future?

And are you tired of the batman movies? I liked them alot but seriously, we need to get some variety.

and what would you rather fight, 100 duck sized horses or 1 horse sized duck. I wold go for the duck. I have a fear of duck sized horses.

reply

Just don't set your expectations so high that you can't help but be disappointed.

I would still like to see a good adaptation of a New Teen Titans story. I'll settle for a movie based on the Games graphic novel.

I don't see an end to the Batman and Justice League movies for the time being. The best chance for other projects are the stand-alone movies, but even with those there are still many Elseworlds stories that could be told such as Gotham by Gaslight, The Nail or Red Son.

The giant duck. It would taste better than the horses.

Really hoping for a future Titans movie, especially since the live action show is dead

The Killing Joke is my #1 favorite graphic novel, and it was the first thing that cemented my love for Batman and Joker when I got it for Christmas in '88, so my expectations are through the roof for this film. If it's as good as what they did for Year One and TDKR then I will be happy.

For future adaptations I would love to see a film about Hush, Dark Victory and Long Halloween.

Am I tired of Batman movies? I believe a true fan of Batman wouldn't say this, if anything 1 or 2 movies a year is not enough. Also would love to see a Blackest Night film, but that's probably not going to happen..... even though I said that same thing about a Killing Joke film years ago so anything is possible.

I'm loving most if not all of the DC animated movies, however, I too would like to see a variety of different characters or scenarios.
The following is a list of animated movies I would love to see:
Justice League Dark
Swamp Thing
Speeding Bullets, an Elseworld story by J M Dematteis.
The Spectre, this time a full feature.
Phantom Stranger
Constantine

Here are a few animated movies I would like to see happen:
A Wonder Woman/Flash team up movie
Justice Society(Golden Age Characters)
Darkseid War
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Justice League: Gods and Monsters sequel

reply

They did an Arkham Movie, it's called Batman Assault on Arkham.

reply

They did the Darkseid: War thing as Justice League: War, which is the genesis of the current JL incarnation.

Long Halloween would be cool...and though this would require a build up given the environment, No Man's Land would be quite cool as well. Got that book years ago and it was the first novel of Batman I read so it always held a spot in my heart. There are others we simply won't see that would be cool as one-off's but they're a little too obscure for people who aren't already comic fans and who don't know the elseworld stories...Red Son for example with Superman ending up landing in Soviet Russia instead of rural US as a baby, or Batman: In Darkest Knight dealing with an elseworld where Bruce Wayne gets the green lantern power ring instead of Hal Jordan and becomes kind of a Batman/Green Lantern hybrid. I would also quite like to see someone else come in...I was always a huge fan of Green Arrow for example, kind of like Batman with a Robin Hood motif and (at least in the comics) a lot less "dark baggage". Mind you, the recent live series has kind of shifted that a bit making him more the brooding dark hero...

Those are largely mini's or one shots though and in the case of Red Son deals with old political tensions that many kids today wouldn't even remember...there's one hell of a lot to draw from honestly. You know what would be killer, would NEVER happen mind you due to copyrights and all, but an Avengers/Justice League crossover cartoon...there's comics to base it on too (if I remember Darkseid even winds up getting a hold of Thanos's Infinity Gauntlet in one), but like I said, it would cost so, so much money to line the IP's up it will never happen. It's a shame because it would make an absolute fortune if it was marketed well, and I think that many, many people are a lot like me in that they happily enjoy both Marvel and DC properties. People paint it like it's a console war or something, you like DC you HAVE to hate Marvel and vice versa, but I grew up with both of them, had no issue reading an Avengers issue and going right to a Justice League story and eating both of 'em up...bothers me the only way people can think of them now is a "vs." mentality, immediately asking who would win, Iron Man/Cyborg or Hulk/Superman and I'd kill for an event where they wind up working together...I would utterly kill to see Batman and Widow playing off each other, or Thor and Wonder Woman...alas...it's a pipe dream...but I can still have my fantasies lol :P

I loved that JLA/Avengers crossover! Hard to believe it was so long ago! 

(Nice post, btw.)

I am absolutely exhausted of Batman movies! It's every damn thing they do now! Yes, I want more variety. Sadly, we won't get it. I've seen their slated upcoming animated films list and it's nothing but Batman for the next 3 years. Justice League is on hold with DC Rebirth upcoming and it's nothing but Batman *beep* It's been 3 years since we had a solo Superman movie; 7 since Green Lantern; 8-9 since Wonder Woman. I liked Flashpoint also, but they never would have done that story in the first place if there was any other character as the #2 to Flash in that story. If Flashpoint didn't have the Thomas Wayne Batman as the ride-along, they would not have made that movie in a million years.

there are the justice league films. there are others solos but they kinda suck.

reply

Really confident that the killing joke will be great especially because they were able to get Conroy and Hamil. I would like them to reboot the justice league war universe they have, not really a big fan of it and the direction its heading. Would like DC to try a movie on one of their less mainstream characters like booster gold

reply

I think rebooting is still being to generous. Outright scrapping it seems like the the only logical option.

Just go back to making great adaptations of comic book classics , like they did with dark knight returns, death of superman (kind of), even flashpoint or the new frontier. Better than their attempts at new 52 titles, and I like the new 52 (for the most part)

That being said. If they were to continue...stop with batman. There are plenty of other characters out there. And we still dont have a good green lantern movie. Justice league dark/of america, a solo aquaman, green arrow, solo constantine, superman, even harley quinn or the spectre. All titles that have stories that can fit into the DCAU or standalone movies.

I cant believe I am saying this, but there is more to DC comics than batman

reply

Oh I 100% agree. Batmans my favorite character, but man oh man does he have way too many animations dedicated to him. Although I am so happy there doing the Killing joke, I would like them to stop on the batman movies and move towards the rest of the justice league. After watching Batman:Bad Blood I think that was it for me on the batman films ahaha

reply

i want an adaptation of Emperor Joker.

also Crisis On Infinite Earths and Convergence would be nice.

reply

I think it will be good because Bruce Timm is involved as long as a lot of the original voice actors from the Animated series.
The new batman movies deserve some of the complaints they get. I like them too for the most part but still feel they take a great story arc from the comics and make it less by giving it a twist. I liked battle for the cowl and the Batman and Robin series with Dick and Dameon but the animations just don't capture that same magic.
