It's very different from Shakespeare in Love. The acting and writing in The Favourite is better than that of Shakespeare in Love. It is an interesting film, not perfect, but certainly not boring.

The closest analogy I can think of is that scene in (I believe) Monty Python and the Holy Grail when one peasant says: "He must be the king," followed by another asking: "How can you tell?" only to have the first one answer back: "He hasn't got shit all over him."
The ruling class is depicted as severely out of touch inbred idiots manipulated by their supporters, and the silliness of the period is portrayed to a degree not found in your usual tales of stately manner.

No, the dialogue in this one is probably pretty far away from Shakespeare in Love, although I have to admit I've never seen the latter there. The title alone about puts me to sleep.
Fred, the line in Holy Grail is actually "he must be a king", which makes it all the more funnier. It's like in medieval times, kings were ten-a-penny, which they were.
I got a Madness of King George vibe from one of the clips I saw.
shareIt's definitely no Shakespeare in Love that's a fact, and it certainly isn't boring. It's a bit like if Peter Greenway and Stanley Kubrick joined together to make a dark comedy, The Favorite would be the film. It's more a art film, and isn't as easy going and audience friendly as SIL. It's going to annoy a lot of people cause it doesn't give you easy answers. But Olivia Coleman is bloody awesome in this and if she doesn't win Best Actress at the Oscars, it be a shame. Emma Stone needs to do more bitchy and nasty characters, she's pretty damn good at it, this my favorite performance from her. Rachel Weisz delivers her best performance in years for me in this film.
I'm surprised it's getting so much award attention, not cause it's a bad film just cause it's such a non Oscar type film.
I liked that movie!
It was a lot more than a romance, but also had an entertaining take on show business in the old days.
