Spelling of Matteusz

Why do they spell Matteusz "the Pole" with double T when the actual Polish male given name is Mateusz (with only one T)? Lack of research?

reply

Yew it's weird and before I watch episode 1 I didn't know he is from Poland

reply

Yeah, being Polish I have to say the spelling looks terrible.
I could understand if he was born in the UK to Polish immigrants and they decided to give him a Polish name with English spelling (in which case the sz would be replaced with sh), but as far as I remember he was born in Poland and later moved to the UK. So this spelling doesn't make any sense.

English cultural imperialism?

Who *beep* cares how it's spelt. My name is Anthony. I dare you to pronounce it properly.

The post was about spelling of the name not about its pronunciation. Given that there are 831,000 Polish-born immigrants in the UK (2005 estimate), plus the descendants of over 200,000 immigrants who settled in the UK after WW2, it would be common courtesy to spell the name correctly.
