Darlene.....so awfully good - one of those characters you can't wait until.....(NO SPOILERS PLEASE)..

they are killed off!!

But one thing that really irritated me in Season 3, Episode 1 - there is no way her character would have joined a mommy group. None whatsoever. And it's really irritating when writers do this all for the sake of offering a sub-plot to the tale for mere amusement.

reply

Could see her joining one. Kind of trying to relive her youth.

reply

Nah, it's completely lazy writing only done so she could do what she did in that episode. I just re-watched the first two seasons to catch up and joining a parenting group is completely out of her character.

And if she'd kill someone for merely uttering the word "Redneck" there is no way her character would take parenting advice from a bunch of millennials.

reply

...well, that's what made it a scary scene. She was "faking it" and ended up taking it out on one of the millennials -- the knife to the tire, and things could have been worse, but the baby rather forces her to control her old psycho impulses.

Indeed, later in the season when Wendy tries to undo Darlene's motherhood ruse, Wendy actually uses the insult "redneck"(she has to know from Marty that Darlene is triggered by it) and gets punched in the mouth in return

"That oughta do it," Wendy says in triumph -- the baby can be taken back.

But no...Darlene has some local power in court(and a surprise witness) and gets to keep the baby and just might keep going to parenting classes for "appearances."

reply

Do you recall if they ever revealed the dirt they have on the top cop?

reply

Maybe she was required to by court order, but they didn't show that, and I agree, it's pretty out of character otherwise. (Heck, even if there were a court order, I tend to doubt she'd do it.)

reply

I agree. Definitely doesn't match with the rest of how her character has played out thus far, but it could be one of those underlying social services recommendations. Nonetheless, it was kind of funny to see.

reply

Shes establishing that she's a good mother to guard against Wendy trying to take zeke away from her

reply

Now that would have been a plausible explanation, IF it had been made or suggested by the creators. It would have fit, but again, I think that it was just a lazy thing to do without laying that groundwork.

reply

My guess is they had a reason for it that ended up on the cutting room floor when they decided to expand the brother's role, for whatever reason.
