She's miscast as a 15 year old. I know she's only a few years older than that but she looks 10 years older, at least.
Also, her filthy language to her parents is unrealistic. In a show filled with lowlifes, she's my least favorite character.
Is she really only 15 on the show? I know Marty yells at the pervs at the dock that "she's 15", for whistling at her, but maybe he was exaggerating to shut them up. Maybe she's really 16 or 17.

This show is far from being filled with lowlifes. Cade was the biggest lowlife and he is gone.
Marty and Wendy, not to mention Jonah, are far more intelligent than the average person.
Wouldn't you agree that in SEASON 1 the Snells and the Langmores are lowlifes? Maybe they are speaking in terms of SEASON 1, and I would totally agree.

I think the effing and jeffing (filthy language) is to show that she's a bit messed up and lacks respect for her parents because of their lifestyle. For the same reason she calls them by their christian names instead of 'mom and dad' and gets into all that 'self emancipation' legal nonsense.
TOTALLY HOT! But that also comes from a lack of any other hot females in this series (Besides Rachel [Blue Cat owner] and Erin [Helen's daugher and friend of Charlotte's], who both have very limited roles)

I'm just not attracted to Ruth. Most TV shows and movies are full of hot women, but OZARK just doesn't follow the pattern. (Ditto for Roseanne / The Conners)... shows that want to reflect the dregs of society.
I'll just offer a comparison. In A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, (almost) every...single...female... is SMOKING HOT. But it's Yuppie, suburban Boston. Comes with the territory.
AMLT is a pretty horribly written show though, so who cares. I couldn't watch it beyond several episodes, it got embarrassing.
Reality is not full of gorgeous people, so that's not one of my requirements for a quality TV series. Especially since they are all reasonably good-looking people, btw - it's not like anyone on Ozark is "circus-ugly".
Would it even occur to you to apply this standard to Homeland or Breaking Bad?
I don't usually judge Men's looks, but I think that Jason, Russ, Wyatt, and Darlene are all "circus ugly". I didn't watch Homeland, but everyone is reasonably good-looking and upper-Middle-Class on Breaking Bad, except for addict/Whore Wendy, Badger and Skinny Pete.

No I meant Roy the FBI guy. Jason Bateman is not ugly. I was looking up Roy's name on IMDB (Jason Butler Harner) and wrote Jason by accident -- my bad! His name is so infrequently referenced on the show I didn't know either the character name or actor name!
Darlene is just old, btw, not ugly. You can tell she was beautiful when she was young.
Helen is much uglier, if we are talking features.
Yikes! Frankly I find the Darlene actress to be an absolute dog even with taking her age into account. I'm sure the horrible & disgusting character she plays makes it even worse. I can look at an actress like Helen Mirren and tell she was likely very attractive in her younger years. No dice with Darlene.

The character isn't particularly attractive, but the actress definitely is, especially with another hairstyle.
