The gay scenes between Petty and Russ Langmore look so forced. I'm all for gay rights, but this right here is gay propoganda. The gay story arc is completely unnecessary for the show and is only included to promote a progressive Netflix agenda. You could have easily had an attractive female cop seduce Russ, yet you have a gay cop attempting to turn a redneck hillbilly into a homosexual, and what do ya know...it worked. Makes absolutely no sense.
shareIf anything, I think the gay characters in the show are depicted as being sexually deviant, depraved nutcases. The FBI guy obviously had shitload of emotional baggage and used his orientation to lure Langmore into his case. Langmore was a bum willing to commit cold blooded murder, a crappy father, and also gay when it suited him. Not exactly the domesticated gay couple image that you see depicted on other shows.
shareSPOILERS I agree there is a gay agenda in a lot of writing (and also the pushing of inter-racial relationships) but actually I thought the Russ/Petty storyline worked quite well. Russ is secretly of the gay persuasion but is in one of probably the last places in the western world where it's not 100% openly accepted and actively encouraged. He is probably very lonely. Along comes Petty who he not only finds physically attractive but they also have things in common (fishing) and Russ sees a future together. That level of trust was the only way Petty could get Russ to work undercover for him. I'm not sure a heterosexual relationship could have established the same level of intensity and betrayal.

It could have been handled with more with more subtlety. A character who happens to be homosexual? Okay whatever if it doesn't feel shoehorned as it often is these days. I'm sure most people don't care that much until it becomes an unnecessary focal point or a hamfisted"hey look" movement. The character could have worked perfectly well without without the homosexual angle but the main problem was the unnecessary & gratuitous scenes putting his degenerate behavior on full display.

I think it's more about the writer writing about what's meaningful to them. In Sense8 for instance, I wouldn't say that it bothered me, per se, but it definitely wasn't relatable for me that every other character was gay or trans. It's really not a part of my reality in such a massive proportion.
But it's obviously very meaningful to the Wachowskis and is probably most, if not all, of their social circle.
Was it an agenda, necessarily? I don't know if they were trying to change anyone's worldview or perception with that. It's more like putting your music on in the car with the hope or expectation that everyone will equally appreciate it.
