Ruth Wilson is annoying in this film...

I'm a huge fan of slower paced horror / gothic films. I love Lynch and Kubrick. So based on everything people said, I thought this would be right up my ally.

But right off the bat, I find the main protagonist (played by Ruth Wilson) to be extremely grating. Her personality is so...nebbish? Can't exactly put my finger on it. Maybe it's flighty?

I first noticed it during the phone call with her friend. The scene went on and on, and her raspy voice and the way she jumped back and forth - made me want to smack her lol

Then in other scenes, her behavior is so odd and unnatural. Her facial expressions almost have a tick at times. And I guess the way she carries herself, is almost childish.

This is the first time Ive really felt this way about a performance / character. Don't know what it is, beyond I guess I just find the character really grating. It's making it hard for me to stick with the film.

I know what you mean. I found her to be a little charming, but mostly annoying. Incredibly quirky. Her mannerisms were very strange. She doesn't seem fit for the modern world. I don't necessarily mean that as an insult.

The moment that immediately comes to mind for me is when she goes through a drawer and smacks her own hand.

She was a fraidy cat. Phobic.

It was like no real character. Like how she talked to her friend was not realistic. Her tone never once changed.duting the movie. Unbearable.

I felt the same way. I like a good ghost story, and I had seen Ruth in Jane Eyre and liked her in it. But her "American" accent in this is just weird, and I hate how slow she talks. Which may be purposeful, to set the tone for the movie, except that she said that thing about how, in a house that's had a death in it, time moves more quickly. I would think it would be the other way around.

But the thing that annoyed me even more than the constant whispering & weird way of talking was the language she used. Like when she was talking to her friend on the phone. It made me wonder when this was supposed to be set because she talked like it was the 50's or something. "Anyhoo" and "Heavens to Betsy" and things like that. And the way she talked to her friend sounded childish as well, like the OP said.
