Dustin Hoffman is DREADFUL!

This made me realize what a limited actor Dustin Hoffman is -- or he is really lazy and just wasn't even trying.

His American accent made him stand out as being from a different place and time, but he didn't help things by having such a late-20th Century way of speaking.

I thought is was absolutely awful. He kept taking me out of the show.

reply

I totally agree!!! It was distracting...

reply

Absolutely.

He was distracting and never felt like he was part of the same region as everybody else in the show because of the difference in accent. It was honestly quite confusing.

Even his delivery of his lines wasn't great. He almost never showed emotion in the entire series.

reply

He should try acting sometime.

Whatever you are, be a good one.

reply

Madden isn't much better as Cosimo.

I would really like to have seen Jeremy Irons or Daniel Day-Lewis play Giovanni, the father, and a much better actor, maybe James McAvoy or James Franco for Cosimo too.

Hoffman didn't have that big a role, so he was OK. But Cosimo is central, and Madden has no range or nuance.

reply

You should definitely watch the Borgias, where Jeremy Irons is an excellent Pope as Rodrigo Borgia.

reply

But pretty much the only good performance in it.

reply

I'm finding everyone to be rather dreadful, not just Hoffman. Perhaps it's the direction - in an attempt to make things weighty/deep, it just ends up stodgy and forced. How imdb managed to garner 8+ rating points is a mystery to me.

reply

Why all the hate? I thought he was wonderful.
