So I don't get this. This other girl gets the part but then the understudy gets hurt and they call her back. So why wouldn't she get offered the understudy from the beginning? And seeing who they picked for the lead? It was like complete opposite. I know it's a movie but just like another post about the NYC apartments, make some semblance of reality.

shareThe director told Beth that "Jane" broke her arm (or leg). He also said (not very sincerely) that Beth was his first choice, but the producers made him go with Jane. From this, it is clear that Beth was going for the understudy part all along, a part that she lost out to Jane.
