I agree. In the first movie, both of them were basically the villains, as they killed or harmed a bunch of innocent people (Emily Blunt was the protagonist).
Here, Alejandro and Matt were redeeming heroes, taking out the bad guys. I didn’t buy it either.
It wasn’t just Alejandro’s refusal to kill Isabel. He was super-nice and courteous with the mute couple, asking permission for food, water, and shelter. In the first movie, he would have killed them and taken what he needed. And at the end, he doesn’t kill the boy who shot him the face. In the first movie, that boy would have been dead.

He would have killed the deaf couple in the first movie? I completely disagree with that. He's certainly a bad guy because you can't just go around killing criminals and their families as revenge, but everybody he kills has connections to the cartel. I'm sure he would have taken Kate out for getting in his way, because like I said he's a bad guy on a mission, but there's still a difference between that and murdering random people for food and water.
I see them blurring the line between heroes and villains in both movies. They still kill without hesitation, kidnap a teenage girl and do all of this with the intention of stirring up a war with the cartels.
