Most overrated film of all time that critics are afraid to critizice out of fear of being called racists

It is rather ridiculous that this film has a 98% on rotten tomatoes and you see it presented as being among the top horror movies of all time by several outlets (google "best horror movies of all time" to see an example).

This movie is very much the same case as Black Panther. A mediocre movie that critics were afraid to say anything negative about it out of fear of being called racists or to try to sound "politically correct".

Seriously, this movie is not that good.

Why should anyone invest any thought to what you deem seriously? Kind of a rather specious argument to stake your subjective opinion on and represent as fact, now isn't it?

1. Who was going to say a critic was racist?
2. Why would critics be afraid of being called racist now as opposed to any other time?
3. What would have even happened if a critic were called "Racist", or "Sexist", or "Crazy" or "Dumb" or "Misguided", etc, etc?
4. Would a critic lose something for being called anything?

You're not a charter member of the Faux Outrage Brigade, passionately offended that a movie is rated better or higher than a movie you deem superior now are you?

2. Because identity politics has weaponized feelings and racism
3. De-platformed, cancelled, harassed, pick your poison.

1. The social justice ideologues

Ohhhh, wouldn't that just be other people with other opinions of critics different than yours?

2. Because identity politics has weaponized feelings and racism
tsk, tsk, tsk. isn't this nothing more than another opinionated description of an agenda to deconstruct foundational positions against racist tenets that make those that feel "uncomfortable" feel, "Safe"?
3. De-platformed, cancelled, harassed, pick your poison.
No need to pick any. No critic has ever been de-platformed. No critic has ever been cancelled. No critic has ever been harassed. No critic has ever been poisoned for calling a "Black Movie", whatever constitutes in your mind what a Black Movie is/was/will be, as poor, inferior, not good, substandard or whatever the term that should be used to accurately reflect YOUR acceptance of how the movie SHOULD be rated?

4. Their job
Critics are not losing their jobs or even in fear of losing their jobs.

Of course you are really entitled to believe in these numbered opinions.

"2. Because identity politics has weaponized feelings and racism"

There was really never a need to "weaponize" racism. Racism is nothing but a weapon.

• "Who was going to say a critic was racist?"

The woke parish

• "Why would they be afraid of being called racist now as opposed to any other time?"

Being called 'Racist' right now (with the exception of anti-white racism, of course) is equivalent to be called 'sinner' or 'heretic' a couple of centuries ago. It's basically being labeled as someone who has sinned against the woke commandments.

• "What would have even happened if a critic were called "Racist", or "Sexist", or "Crazy" or "Dumb" or "Misguided", etc, etc?"

Probably he would be fired. Most professional critics work for a magazine.

• "Would a critic lose something for being called anything?"

His job.

Wow I’ve never read something as stupid and naive as what you wrote. “What would even happen if a critic were called “racist, sexist, etc.” do you not read the news or have any idea of what’s going on in the U.S.? “Who is going to say a critic is racist?” People are actively trying to be offended and interpreting everything in the most racist way possible, then proceed to “cancel” the purported offenders. As in ruin their careers and reputation, threatening them, that sort of thing.

That is a reason why people fear being called racist now moreso than in the past. But all of this involves how now people are selectively outraged by specific instances of racism. I can rip the culture, history, appearance, any kind of personal attacks, stereotypes, whatever I want, as long as it’s against certain groups of people, but if someone even “perceives” me looking crosseyed at other groups my career would be in jeopardy. I could be publically vilified by groups of people online who actively try to blow everything out of proportion and context to do harm.

Regardless of your position on this sort of thing, I cannot believe that you are asking those questions. You’re basically saying (regardless of if the accusation is truthful/legitimate) “what’s the big deal if you get accused of sexual harassment at work? Why would you be more worried about that happening than 40 years ago? What bad things could possibly come from those accusations and who would even file a complaint or make a big deal about it?”

It's cool if it's not your cup of tea but it was my favorite film of 2017. Also just because it has a high rotten tomatoes score does not mean critics didn't say anything negative about it, it just means that most of them rated it overall positively

Nicely stated but just this bit of clarity needs to be provided:

Get Out's 98% on Rottentomates is NOT the critics rating of the movie overall as positively. The critics' summarized rating is as follows:

Average Rating: 8.31/10
Total Count: 364
Fresh: 358 Rotten: 6

The aggregate of 364 Critics gave Get Out an average rating of 83%. How does that compare to other "Horror Movies"? I don't even know or even care. It was a well done movie. Full disclosure: I own it on Blu-Ray.

reply

Horror movies aren't usually a hit with critics so I'm assuming 83% is higher than most. But horror more than any other genre seems to produce a lot of garbage and when something of higher quality (which I consider Get Out) comes along, it's not surprising that it would score higher. And full disclosure I like a lot of the horror films that I would consider garbage but I can also acknowledge when they're lacking in quality. Get Out on the other hand seems to be a step up from the vast majority and to me at least is a genuinely good movie and not just a fun horror flick.

The only thing ridiculous I see here is your inability to accept that other people are going to enjoy things more than you, and they will vote it accordingly to how they see it on websites such as Rotten Tomatoes whether you like it or not so you might as well just get over it. The word "overrated" has been one of the laziest words ever used in the history of any kind of review, and this is a prime example of it.

Lol at you claiming critics would be afraid to speak their mind on the movie out of fear of being labeled racist. The only way a review can be considered racist is if said review has actual racial hatred written clear as day within it. Otherwise it's just a review about someone disliking the movie regardless of the skin colors of any of the actors, director, etc involved with it.

reply

Dude, I agree with you that this film and Black Panther were overrated, but one must also bear in mind that overly hyped movies usually end-up disappointing those of us who go in with big expectations. In terms of your remark about the critics not wanting to offend; in this day and age, I'm not quite sure that's even a consideration. There are a boat load of mainstream Hollywood films which I thought were not that good, which were hyped through the roof, and which many individuals on message boards such as this one concurred with my opinion. But at the end of the day, you gotta respect other people's opinions, as is the case now(your opinion).

And just for the record, I am of the brown skin persuasion ( just thought I'd add that in to make a point).

reply

I understand being raw from identity politics but I don't get the hate for this movie. This movie isn't what OP thinks it is. OP did not watch it, I assume.

It is a beautifully imagined thread pulled from Hitler's Nazi Germany's loss in the Olympics. Does race and racism exist in the tale? Yes. But by no means is it some "woke" screed meant to indoctrinate you nor is it a modern exercise in identity politics. In a way, it mocks the identity politics of history.

I wish Us was as good as this (I still liked Us, though).

Get Out: 9/10
Us: 7/10

reply

I very much agree. The perceived "identity politics" is typically just a kneejerk reaction from those looking to complain about that. As you said while the film may touch on the issue of race & racism it by no means dwells on it. It's merely a part of the story and *gasps* these things do exist in real life. I actually wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I definitely didn't enjoy 'Us' as much though. Maybe I just didn't "get it".

I came to this board to see if anybody had posted something exactly like this. Thanks, ElSofoque, for delivering exactly what I had hoped I would see!

This claim is just ridiculous. Being accused of liking a movie simply not to look racist is beyond stupid. Get Out is a great film, and no, I’m not pretending to like it because I’m afraid of being labeled a racist. Nigger nigger nigger nigger. White lives matter. I don’t care. Just because YOU cant see why Get Out is a masterpiece on every single fundemental cinematic level doesn’t mean everyone who can is just trying not to get outted as racist. Just because YOU cant see immaculate screenwriting, flawless directing decisions (from a newbie, no less!), and all around fantastic performances from mostly local Alabama nobodies, doesnt mean everyone is lying about their opinon. Grow up.

reply

What's ridiculous is that it won Peele the Academy Award for best original screenplay, when it's pretty much a rip off of Ehren Kruger's script for The Skeleton Key (2005).
