MOVIE COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF THE RACE REVERSED

Chris been white, and he's going to meet his black girl friend's family.

reply

I suppose, but this was better.

reply

Neither was better, the whole just using "poe black people" for the lame reasons they gave was just to feed into the supposedly 'woke' white guilted people... Just tiresome

Would have worked if it was just dried out older people taking over younger flesh... the whole idea behind this isn't,t particularly fresh either; The Man With Two Heads did the racism bit better

reply

Except that movie would have been original and all the white critics and silly white kids that NEVER interact with anyone darker than snow wouldn't get to pat themselves on the back like they did for overrating Get Out.

reply

Possibly yeah, but I'm pretty sure someone would have made the same thread vice versa. ;)

reply

True, but hey in real life, fair is good and black is bad, most of the people follow that rule

This doesn't even make sense, and would have been an entirely different premise. The idea here is that the white cultural hegemony oppresses and appropriates black culture, which is what happens in real life. It doesn't happen the other way around.

So, black people don't appropriate any elements of white culture? Black people don't appropriate the lifestyle that is characteristic to white culture? White music? White clothes? Haircut? No?
Assimilation versus Appropriation versus Appreciation.

Throw the word Cultural onto the front of those three words and you'll see nuance as to why the questions you are asking appear to lack merit and will not solicit the response that you expect to get.

You've even added a loaded phrase as to this issue of appropriation, "besides it being potentially bad for whites if we're talking about negative elements."

Not necessary to your POV unless it is to slant the discussion in what you feel is the opposite direction.

NorrinRad has the right idea. That's assimilation. White cultural hegemony co-opts so as to regulate and control. Black people can take on characteristics of traditionally white culture, as we see in the movie, but they are not appropriating it so much as being assimilated *by it*. There is simply an irreversible power structure here that is historically entrenched. It's the same structure that makes the concept of "reverse racism" a deeply erroneous idea.

I thought it made more sense this way. What black person would like to transplant their brain into a white weakling? It wouldn't have made sense. I mean I am white myself and I have to work out 4x as much as my black friends to look as athletic as they do.

reply

I can see the alternate movie now...

"This is Bob the plumber, Joe the electrician, and Steve the accountant...they've been with our family for years ever since daddy got beat in the final round of a spelling bee in the third grade."

reply

Why do you say that? It was great just the way it is, a great horror movie with sharp social satire. It's a breath of fresh air. Your comment doesn't make any sense, and sounds vaguely racist.
