Abbie Cornish Australian accent surprising

I guess a gal from Australia could find herself married to a sheriff in a small rural town in Missouri. Still, it took me by surprise. Willoughby looks like the type of guy who marries his high school sweetheart. Anyone else think it was different to hear an Australian accent in the middle of the very locally set drama?

reply

Yes!!! Totally thought it was odd..

But for me it was less believable from her side. Aussie girl backpacker/travellers rarely visit random small towns in middle america.

But if one were to pass through.. i could believe Willoughby would be the one to wife her up :)

Glad I wasn’t the only one perplexed by this. I also thought of her as an Aussie backpacker doing a walkabout around the States who falls for this charming, roguish county sheriff.

Maybe they met through the Internet. I have known some very unconventional international couples I never thought possible, but yet they exist, largerly thanks to old school chat programs like IRC or Yahoo! Messenger (because usually they don't see pics first, unlike with Facebook or Instagram today.)

It stopped me for a moment, but I figured he might've been a Marine who had liberty in NZ or Australia, or even England or Canada and met her there.

People who live in "the commonwealth" travel freely among all those countries. It's probably the only advantage to being a "subject."

It is fun to think up these backstories to justify her accent. All plausible. The Sheriff looks like a retired Marine. She looks like an adventurous backpacker.

I am sure they could have hired a coach to teach Abbie Cornish the local accent. So I wonder if the director made a conscious choice to let her keep her Aussie accent, maybe to make us all think on it a bit.
