I didn't believe a single performance.

Frances' character was wildly overwrought - almost like a parody of what someone might think a rough mid-westerner female might be. Woody was fine - until
he blew his brains out right off the bat
. Sam Rockwells' character was one of the worst performances I've seen from him. The plot was so underdeveloped that I didn't care about her daughter or the situation one iota. It was basically the "Let's watch Frances say 'Fuck' a bunch of times!" Show. And why was Dinklage even in this? He served no meaningful purpose except to be a dwarf. Maybe he was just available and bored. No way this is a contender for best *anything*.

You seem to be the minority.

I see that! Maybe I will give Sam and Frances a pass - I watched it again. It's the "Edgy" writing and meandering plot that stink. Not the actors. Not sure if they were the BEST of the year, though.

reply

I'll watch it too. You got me interested and maybe you are right.

reply

Just watched it. It's an ok flick but no standout.

I also think Rockwell was much better than McDormand in this but both did a great job.

Sam Rockwells' character portrayal of his character was particularly bizarre & bad. It's like he thought he was filming a different genre of movie.

reply

Actually no, that was the point of his character. He is over his head and delusional and this is why he seemed so bizarre. Faith eventually punished him in a unfortunate event. And then he had a change of heart, a realization. The chef's letter to him made him understand something about himself. This is why he ends up being a different person after his nearly fatal tragedy. He has no anger anymore and wants to redeem himself.

This is what makes this movie so deep, but it's kind of acquired taste.

LoL

This was propbably the most well-acted (at the top) film of the year.

Something tells me you are trolling.....

reply

I am not. It just wasn’t a great movie to me. I thought Lady Bird was 100x better.

reply

You flip flopped. You didn't see this or LadyBird

reply

Flip flopped - a little. I watched billboards twice and wasn’t as harsh after 2nd watch. Lady Bird is way better though IMO.

reply

Hmmm yes, you might want to actually watch the films you are speaking of though first

reply

You’ve lost me haha.

To me she was a bit too wink wink in this. Kind of like a bitter version of Margie.

Rockwell did a good job but his transformation made zero sense, it wouldve been more believable has Harrelsons character been the one that solved it.

Ending was a fail.

reply

Woody’s part was written like he had a prior commitment with another film.

But that's the thing, he was. His letter cleared Rockwell's soul. And Rockwell solved the case completely randomly, in a circumstancial turn of events.

Every character in this movie was garbage. Every character was a cartoon character. Rockwell throws a man out of a second story window and then is shocked that he got fired for it. Although Caleb Landry Jones is insufferable as well and deserved to get thrown out a window. Frances' character was a raging cu_t who the media tried to disguise as a strong female character. She assaulting people, cursing up a storm, were we supposed to be rooting for this terrible woman? Dinklage served no purpose, and helps McDormand by covering up her arson attempt. The only character who you felt sympathy for was the dead daughter until the flashback scene. Once the flashback scene happened you saw the daughter was a trailer park, foul mouthed bit_h who calls her mother the C word. So you couldn't even sympathize with her.

Now I know some people will say "well you know your not supposed to like these people." The thing is if you're gonna have characters that are unlikeable to follow, you have to at least make them engaging, or fun to be around. This film had none of that for me. Hated it from start to finish. Like the actors, hated the movie.

But I felt that was the beauty. They were all despicable in their own way, and yet kinda redeemed themselves by the end.

reply

Didn't work for me. But if you liked it, more power to you

Which movies had better overall performances in 2017? Dumbass.
