..gotta love horror flicks..lol

- soo, she lives alone, deaf, and no gun?..interesting.

...Did it ever occur to Maddie that umm,, something bad could happen when you live out in the woods and by yourself? lol.. OR the fact that it's just nice to protect yourself with a gun eh.

...i guess having a gun would end the movie in ten minutes eh lol

..this was well made and creepy tho, i did enjoy it.

She's probably a gun-hating liberal

reply

Not all Liberals are anti-gun, genius.

Respect what you have 🌌

reply

Yes, because if you don't own guns you are a "gun-hater" or a "liberal". What a keen observation. I don't own a car, therefore I must be an automobile hating communist. Also, I don't own a dog, cat, chicken or cow.

reply

Hmmm. Not true for the liberal part, but essentially yes for the gun-hater if your State permits guns.

Guns are modest in price relative to other consumer items, such as TV and such. Does not require much training or accessories. If you choose not to own a gun when your State allows it, yes, you are likely a gun hater. Specifically when the OP noted that the heroine lives in a rural isolated area.

reply

A lot of people probably don't consider having to use one. Even in isolated areas there are sheriff departments, and in real life you're not likely to be in a situation where you have no phone or access to the Internet. Help is always a short call away.

The act of owning a gun is something that probably never even occurs to some people because they don't think about needing one.

Plus, the inner city is far more dangerous than an isolated area. I have never had a problem in the country but I have seen gangs waving pistols at one another and guys get mugged at knifepoint and drive by shootings in cities. My experiences in the woods are like Disney compared to the crap that goes down in bad areas of a metropolis.

stop making sh!t up

i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners

reply

Stop insisting I made that up. I didn't say this stuff happened over a weekend. Those events happened years apart and are the result of 31 years of life, not a typical day in the life.

reply

once again, stop making stuff up. the closest to a ''drive by'' you've ever ''witnessed'' was elliot rodgers

reply

Nope. Some kids drove by and shot at a postal worker while he was in his truck. No one was hit.

reply

Why? He only had a crossbow. What was he - Darryl from The Walking Dead? In fact, he was the one that needed a gun. What kind of psycho stalks people without a AR-15 and unlimited ammo? So unrealistic. And the guy from Pensacola: Wings of Gold didn't have his Hornet with him? A couple of Maverick missiles and Bolt Boy goes down. What this movie needed was a Michael Bay-explosion in the first reel, then a Klan rally in the middle, and a Charlton Heston retrospective to take us out.

As someone from Ireland the absence of a fun didn't even cross my mind. Guess it's an American thing.

Canadian here and used to stay at a deserted cottage alone all the time,i have never actually touched a gun before. It's kind of scary how American's treat them almost like toys (toys meaning adult toys like 4 wheelers, dirt bikes ect.) It's no big plot hole that a gun wasn't in play during the movie. You all need to lose the guns, there is an idiot shooting something up everyday over there.Getting trigger happy over stupid sh*t.

reply

..lol well i wasn't trying to start a gun debate people.

...i figured it's common sense to protect yourself when living in the woods by yourself. Anything can happen, and usualy does in horror movies.

....It's not about being "trigger happy", or an "american thing", it's about protecting your life no matter where you live. But in the end, yes this is a movie, if she had a gun, the movie could be over in less than ten minutes lol

...plus, why take a chance, better to be safe than sorry.

....

reply

I can hear and even if I would isolate myself I wouldn't own a gun for moral reasons, I would feel unsafe with it being in my area, too many possibilities of people getting hurt unintentionally, and I don't have a disability.

reply

me too they scare the sh*t out of me just thinking about them.

reply

You know what scares me more than a carefully used gun in the hands of someone who knows how to use it? Violent killers who pick off those who are terrified of even thinking about an object that may be used to protect oneself.

reply

You are scared by an inanimate object? You need to go to a range and get unscared.

reply

back in the 90s when i was a kid, my dad and i lived in rural oklahoma. somebody repeatedly broke into our home to call 1-(900) sex lines with our phone and left porno mags in our yard. the cops didn't do anything and we were in farm country where there were no police stations nearby. you can bet your ass that my dad bought a gun for protecting his family, and i think 99% of people put into a situation like that would do that exact same thing. it's easy to paint guns as the "bad guy" until you've been backed into a corner and put into a situation where you have no other choice than to buy one for safety.

reply

Guns aren't bad, but you said it yourself. It's only after the situation that your dad armed himself for protection. The OP is acting like it's common sense to have a gun if you are out alone in the woods, because most people should expect something terrible to happen. That's not the case. There are a lot of people who are more afraid of a visitor or even themselves mishandling the gun and hurting themselves or a loved one than a psycho stalking you in the woods. And I'd bet the former happens a lot more than the latter.

Still, I do believe guns have a use for protection, but I get how a lot of people want nothing to do with them.

reply

Hahaha... best comment ever.

reply

(Maybe she didn't know she was in a horror movie) LOL

reply

Common sense is relative. In a world where we're bombarded by media showing shootings and where we see horror movies showing psychos in the woods, many believe, like you, it'd be common sense to have a gun for protection. Even if this is a horror movie, as you say, the character doesn't know that...we're not supposed to watch this thinking "Wow, this is a horror movie so why doesn't she have a gun?"

The reality is there is far more crime in the city, crime rates have been falling steadily for the past ~50 years, and not everyone is worried about some psychopath showing up at their door, because it's just that rare an occurrence. A lot of people are actually afraid of even having guns in their house. And even though I am not anti-gun (I have shot some, and my brother is a collector), I think there are tons of people who shouldn't have them.

reply

The real state agent should have at least disclosed that it was a horror movie house.

reply

yeah it is scary how Americans treat them. I'm American myself and i am in awe at how stupid people are with guns. I believe in gun ownership, but responsible ownership. I live out in the country, I use it to protect my livestock from wild animals mostly. I would never play around with a gun and it stays locked up unless I absolutely need it. But the real issue is that because the US is so accustomed to guns, and the black market is running rampant with them, I don't see any near future where we could live peacefully without them like other countries, if we ever do get there. at this point, it is better to protect yourself from those who wish to harm you. despite being a first world country, we have a lot of third world thinkers.

reply

Well sure, because home invasions are "stupid sh*t". And yeah, this is a fictional movie. But bad things do happen to people, and having protection in an isolated area is hardly "American's [sic] treat[ing] them almost like toys".

reply

twenty-nine per cent of Canadian homes possess an estimated total of nine million firearms. Other authorities insist that even this figure is too low, and that there is at least twenty million firearms in Canada. The UN reported that Canada ranks third among the developed western countries (behind the United States and Norway) in the civilian ownership of firearms.

reply

GUNS are not the problem in America. Hateful, mentally disturbed, terrorists, and young naïve disrespecting human beings who kill are. Do your research before standing on your soap box accusing an entire country. Alcohol and many other things kill more than guns. It's the detail of numerous people dying all at once that has caught the worlds attention and America's. Thank you.

reply

It's a good thing she didn't have a gun. If she did, someone may have gotten hurt!

reply

What is it with Americans that find it odd that someone wouldn't have a gun? I've never seen a gun in my life.

reply

I guess it's just worst case scenario thinking. i live in the woods, on a ranch, and i wouldn't think about not having a gun. coyotes, wolves, wild hogs, bobcats, panthers... i have livestock to take care of and once you experience a baby calf getting hauled away by a pack of coyotes in the middle of the night, not owning a gun doesn't make sense. as for living in the city- i've done that too. having a gun hidden in the house means protection from those who own illegal firearms for home invasions. ya know, since criminals don't exactly follow gun laws. it happens. better to be prepared. and yes, i have been in a situation where someone came onto my property looking to rob my house and just pointing my gun at them made them run off in a hurry. just because there is a gun does not mean it will be fired. as for unintentional accidents- why would anyone 'play' or unsafely mess around with a gun is beyond me. keep it hidden, keep it locked up, don't take it out unless you intend to use it or clean it, and be smart about handling it.

reply

Ditto here. It's a bit terrifying that this is OP's first response :(

reply

[deleted]

How the *beep* is this terrifying? A gun is the best possible method of self-defense... you're another idiot who'd get raped and murdered by the dude in the movie.

reply

Come down to America and visit any of our wonderful Walmarts then.

reply

What is it with non-Americans who don't realize that owning a gun is the best method of self defense?

reply

The best defense is living a society where you don't need self-defense. Americans fail to realize that ;)

reply

Are there actually any societies on earth that have zero burglaries / home invasions though?

reply

Live in utopia? No - because it doesn't exist. How about live in reality.

reply

Yup. Calling you out as an idiot, as well. Paradise does not exist in real life.

reply

Not everyone wants a gun or feels unsafe without one. I don't think it's weird she didn't have one. I probably will never own one just out of personal choice. I have nothing against guns either I just don't particularly want one. I would actually get a big dog for protection if I was the main character.

I did think about how useful it'd be if the main character had a gun but this is a pretty unlikely scenario. Also living in such an isolated area would probably make you feel safe. She had neighbors if there was trouble. She had what seemed to be a security system on her house.
