I thought this was a rerun, but it turns out to be an extended remake.

Why has nobody mentioned the earlier version, My Family and Other Animals (2005)? Doesn't anybody remember it? My memory is that it was a 2-part Masterpiece Theater.

How does this new version compare with that one?

The 2005 version was okay, certainly a lot better than this mess. But the best version is the 1987 BBC one, with Hannah Gordon as Mother and Brian Blessed as Spiro. That captures the mood of the book far better.

Thanks! I was trying so hard to remember the title -- Imelda Staunton was so great.

Haven't had time for the new one yet -- still finishing up The Missing -- not sure I will be able to see Keeley Hawes as Louisa.

Imelda Staunton was good, but Hannah Gordon was the best Mother. gerald Durrell was thrilled to bits by her performace 'she IS Mother' he said when saw it, a great compliment because he worshipped his mother.

The original BBC series was great, the 2005 film was great, and this series is great.
