Did Farrier really have to give himself up to the Nazis?

He could have maneuvered his plane to make another round about and land safely near the British exit site bu the chooses to fly further down the beach to meet the enemy and give himself up. Yeah, I know it shows how he's not afraid to sacrifice himself but it felt forced.
