Why did they initially have to sneak on the boat?

Why did the two guys try to sneak on the boat initially? At first I thought it was because they were French trying to get on an English boat. Or is it because certain ranks get priority to the boats?

Boat was evacuating wounded soldiers only, and those two guys were healthy. Their best hope was to sneak on the boat, which they eventually did.

I wondered why they were sneaking on the boat,too. So that's why. Thanks.

They were going out of turn for their unit. Apparently that was why they grabbed the stretcher and made the run. Later someone called them "queue jumping" something or others.

They grabbed the wounded guy so they could get to the front of the line and maybe they’d be able to sneak on
