My God the music was irritating....

.....it barely stopped and most of the dialogue was drowned out.

It seems like Inception might be remembered as the last Nolan movie with good sound, and even that had a few parts where the music threatened the dialogue.

reply

Yes it was. I couldn't understand most of the dialog.

Loud irritating music didn't bother me because I watched the movie with subtitles. So, I was able to think of the soundtrack not as a source of dialogue drowning noise, but as a part of the movie experience. And it really worked. Soundtrack helped to create an intense vibe and made the movie seem more raw and genuine. I think that was Nolan's intention when he opted for this kind of soundtrack.

Well I don't know how you watched it with subtitles because it's still in theaters......but it just didn't work in a theater.....maybe 40% of the dialogue was audible .....

reply

Maybe he lives in Europe like me. Movies are always subtitled in theaters. Anyway, I thought the music was amazing, really elevated the movie. Propably the best use of music in a movie since Mad Max: Fury Road.

I live in a non-english speaking country in Europe, that's how I watched it with subtitles.

I agree i think the soundtrack created a very tense atmosphere

Disagree
Music was astounding and kept me grinding on a knife edge the whole way through.

I agree there were problems with the audibility of the dialogue though but that wasn't always or only due to the music. It's one of those movies where for a large part of the time I kind of work on the basis that not every word of dialogue is crucial, but it is irksome.

I liked the music too---it was weird, eerie, suspenseful, and kept you on your toes enough to wonder what was going to happen next in the film.

reply

I think if you are too aware of the music in a film then it's failed. In this film I found it intrusive and distracting - they even managed to mangle the Elgar at the end.
