IMAX, or 70mm Film Projection?

I have the choice to see this in either one...

Which one should I choose?

& Why?

I was wondering the same thing, what precisely is the difference between them?

I found this great guide that explains it:

Thanks, that really helped.

My pleasure!

just saw it on IMAX and it was glorious, i suggest you sit right in the center of the theater if you can.

I was looking forward to seeing this in 70mm. There's one theater in my region showing it in that format, BUT--

This is the same goddamned theater that screened The Hateful Eight when that was released in 70mm screenings. Here's what these assholes did: Even though they are a 22 screen multiplex, they had to install the projectors in one of their smaller theaters (only 175 seats) because all the bigger houses were booked already to show the new Star Wars film. The size of the screen was a joke. 70mm was designed to be shown in theaters with THOUSANDS of seats, not a little rinky-dink closet.

So guess what? For Dunkirk, these pus-heads put the 70mm screening in the SAME DAMNED THEATER! I guess they saved time and expense since they had that theater set-up from the previous screening of H8. I am so pissed off. The nearest theater elsewhere to see this in 70mm is over 3 hours away, which is a time commitment I'm not going to make.

This is bullshit. The theater chain, btw, is AMC.

reply

AMC isn't about cinema, it's about the revenues. That's all.

reply

Man, that is some bullshit indeed.

I have a great theater near me, where I saw Hateful 8 and it was glorious, it's an artsy theater that takes care to its films, but also has a big beautiful main theater, which they showed the film in.

They are doing the same thing for Dunkirk, but I kinda want to see it in IMAX 70mm, unfortunately the nearest theater showing that is 1 hour 15 minutes away.

But now after hearing your story, I feel like a spoiled jackass. :-)

Sorry you are getting screwed over by AMC. That sucks, and it doesn't surprise me. They are basically McDonald's.

I hope you enjoy the film & have a great time regardless

reply

You want to hear something even more screwed? This very same AMC theater is showing Dunkirk in IMAX...only these jerkwads have a fake IMAX set-up, commonly and degradingly referred to as "LieMax." (If anyone reading hasn't heard about the practice of theaters showing fake IMAX films instead of in their proper projection, then I'm sorry but the links below are going to kill Santa Claus for you, so to speak):

But it doesn't stop my local AMC charging extra admission for the "IMAX experience!!!"...even though it's really not.

I recommend IMAX.

70mm exhibition is great but it is not that much better than the IMAX digital presentation.

IMAX-70mm would be best but it's not available everywhere.
