The show's title refers to the nickname of the area of Times Square in the period this series or pilot episode is set, on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. The block was referred to as the "Forty-Deuce" or simply "The Deuce" and held an extremely high concentration of movie theatres (porno and grindhouse) as well as other adult establishments. By the 1980's, I believe most of the theatres had become porno houses, before they all but vanished. It may seem an odd choice, but it's a name that holds genuine significance to the subject matter.
