Get rid of award shows...period.

Why have the Oscars -- not to mention all the other award shows?

Be it race or gender, there is total inequality.

The top actors here (in the U.S.) make too much money already so why do they have to have their egos stroked as well? It is absurd. (The top earning actors last year were Robert Downey, Jr., Jackie Chan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Adam Sandler.) These people are in the 1%! After all, as they usually say, they are doing what they love. Why isn't that enough? So we can sit at home and watch people tell "who they are wearing?" Why wouldn't doing what they love and making a reasonable living be enough reward in itself? (And it should be the same with others in the industry.)

It is all subjective, and what difference does it make? So many "winners" aren't heard from again, end up being in garbage, or should never have been nominated anyway. (Think Golden Globe winner Lady Gaga.) So many genius folks have never won an Oscar!

On top of everything else, the award shows are so long and boring.

Why not cancel them all?

Thanks to all. I just had to gripe some.😠

Ok. You got your gripe in but are you going to watch? I enjoy watching but agree that it doesn't really reflect who is raking in the money for the studios. Or who is giving us the best performances. Until they change it (I think the lack of diversity has brought major attention to this) the people who choose who gets nominated, and allow a larger voting scope ((I think I heard over 60% is white males over 60 yes old) it will never change. It doesn't reflect what we as movie goers like. The pomp and circumstance is there for the marketing. They'll make mock ups of the "best dressed" ready for prom season..and so on. I've been watching a long time. Most of my friends who used to enjoy it with me (with champagne and a festive atmosphere) no longer watch and this week are complaining that they preempted the finale of Downton Abbey and Shameless for the Oscars. I also agree with you that it's a shame that people like Adam Sandler and many others never get a nod but are beloved by their fans and make their productions profitable.

Have to go. CBS Sunday Morning is doing a story on the man who began IMDb!

Adam Sandler has not been popular in almost 10 years.

I didn't express myself very well. It is upsetting to me that the top 5 actors made so much money -- not that they deserved to be nominated for awards.

Agreed!

Watching today after having never watched an entire one! I must say it is rather boring. The lack of diversity isn't the only problem... same movies in all categories! All the time! Ones that make a lot of money or the "feely-touchy-mooshy" (?) ones!

Mad Max!!? That was shocking! Look to me movies are movies. Entertainment is what they're here for... some memorable and some more than others are forgetful. But there are SO many actors out there, leading, secondary, foreigners etc, so many movies, US, foreign movies that simply just never get mentioned, an award or anything! It's unfair. I got taught from a very young age that life's unfair, but when they have the power to change things, start anew, reinvent themselves and choose not to do so because they're a bunch of geezers who refuse it's almost ifnot insulting to us as the "movie-goers" and to the other many actors making good movies and being great actors but never get anything because they aren't as popular... it is weird and idk.... at the end of the day these actors winners or losers go home witha bag of crap worth more than what most of us combined can't make in a few years and go home to their huge mansions and fancy lives while "work" keeps coming! That's the way it is. In a way these shows are just simply pretentious in all sense of the word. All though, I think that LeoDiCaprio deserved an Oscar, bc if it is the most prestigious award, I've seen him grow up to be a fabulous actor that's hard to come by. Agreed about the Earth. Our planet is precious we must takecare of it. I think global climate change is inevitable, I think it happens and has been happening since tine here began. We're niw inthe middle of it but since its changing at an alarming rate its quite terrifying.we might not see the devestation, we think its bad now, but the future looks grim for our generations to come. 😵

Totally went off subject there, hehehe...sort of! It's all over the place! 😂

Many industries have awards ceremonies. The only reason we dont know about those as much is because virtually no industries have the built-in appeal to the public at large as show-biz. The main function of awards - in any industry - is to reward excellence.
