Hello! White girl here! And I just have to say...

I think Chris Rock did a fan-flipping-tastic job! The entire Academy did!

So many of you people are more butt-hurt about the jokes regarding the controversy than Will, Jada, and Spike Lee ever were about the Oscars being racist!

The show called those noisemakers out, stating that they were upset because Will didn't get nominated. He also said there were more important things to get upset about, especially involving racism. He diffused the situation, then poked fun at it all night. I loved it!

I found it more entertaining than most of the Oscars in the last ten years!

Best parts (to me):

1.) Monologue
2.) Black Actors in the White roles
3.) The Black History month segment featuring Will Smith movies and honoring Jack Black instead (because his name is Black and he too starred in those movies)

Let's not forget after the opening segment when he said he counted at least 9 black actors in the montage.

The fact that most of you didn't even notice this only proves that you went into this looking for ammo because of the BS made up drama Will, Jada, and Spike made. It was all because he wasn't nominated. Period.

You know what says a lot? You know what speaks volumes?
Quincy Jones went. He was a presenter. He showed up even AFTER Will Smith boycotted the Oscars. Why is this important? Because Quincy Jones is part of the reason Will is as famous as he is. Quincy Jones, a successful entertainment industry mogul, who lived through the harder times involving racism and equal opportunity issues (especially in Hollywood), was the head PRODUCER of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". He didn't partake in Will's little temper tantrum.

He went to the award show and presented. He is a man of class and deserved to be there, was honored to be apart of it. What does that say to you?

You sound like a self loathing sellout if you really are white, the ratings were at a 8 year low so there was little interest in Rock's racism/hosting.

reply

I'm self loathing because I have a sense of humor and totally caught them making light of the situation while effectively addressing a real issue, in a better way than the people who caused it?

So you enjoyed the "Slap a white person" segment?

You are self loathing, or rather "self hating white person" as they would say.

Learn to love yourself and be proud of who you are, just as Blacks are proud of their heritage and skin color, you should be too. If any white host took to the streets and stopped white people and asked them if they wanted to slap a Black person over the Oscars, I would be outraged and I'm sure there would have been hell to pay. Then again, if any white artist performed at halftime and donned confederate uniforms in support of the Confederate Flag....wait, that wouldn't have been allowed.

I liked some of Chris' jokes, but he took it too far. I won't be put down by any race, just like any other race won't either. You should show more pride in yourself.

Hello white girl. Have you ever thought that, perhaps, black people might have a point?
Name a mainstream film, where the leading role involved a black person and the fact that they were black was not an integral part of the story. Off the top of my head, I can think of very few. Even fewer, if I discount Denzel Washington and Will Smith.

The industry churns out 'the white man's world' and throws crumbs in the direction of women and the black: victim, sidekick, athlete, or musician. Wakey wakey!

I have a lot of respect for Will Smith. His wife's comments appeared to have blind-sided him, but he stuck by her, understanding her concerns; not for himself, but for those who follow. He's big enough, even for 'white girls' to take note. Considering how brutal the 'academy' have been to those who point the finger, Will Smith has taken a brave stance. (Not that he'll end up on 'welfare', but I'm interested in the fallout).

Sadly, the core of Chris Rock's message didn't filter through to you i.e. Even the best of us white girls and boys are guilty of racism. And he's right! I'm ashamed to say, I'm guilty as charged.

You can carry on with the denial, if you want.

I've been on here for over ten years and very rarely do I find a post as honest as yours. You get it.

Anything you feel guilty about, confess. Don't lock myself or anyone else in with you. Your mistakes are not a blanketed statement for everyone.

Chris Rock was in an invidious position - the elephant in the room could not be ignored! He had to keep every plate spinning and he managed to do it. The poor bastard must have aged 10 years!

You’re attacking people for being ‘butt-hurt’; ‘noisemakers’ and accusing Will Smith of boycotting, because he wasn’t nominated and so had a temper tantrum; you seem to think that Chris Rock was poking fun at the idea that the academy was racist; you loved that there were 9 black actors in the opening segment … blah, blah, blah!

The accusations got to you, didn’t they? Initially, they irked me too. I thought, “Hold on, a few years ago, it was wall to wall black actors and 12 Years a Slave had a black director!”. And then I started looking for percentages … and then I thought “What the F am I doing? I’m searching for excuses! I’m trying to deny that black people have a right to feel that they are less than well-served, when it comes to opportunity!?” I had a knee-jerk reaction, which wished to refute the accusations. That’s why I am ashamed!

I realise that my feelings, my mistakes and my prejudices are mine alone. It just came as a bit of a shock to me that I too would seek, at first, to deny as opposed to listen. Having listened; having thought; having looked as objectively as I am able, I think that black people have a point.

So, after all is said and done, people hear, by and large, what they want to hear. Some people question ‘the powers that be’ and some never do; some people listen to others and some never do; some people question themselves and some never do. I’m not ‘locking you in’ with me.

reply

No, the accusations didn't get to me and perhaps you ought to put your own feelings aside when reading the opinion of someone else. It will help you see what they are trying to say, instead of you getting butt-hurt over it.

There is a right way and a wrong way to address an issue, no matter what it involves, in order to get your point across. My entire point about my original post was that yes, it was the elephant in the room, and I think the Academy handled it beautifully.

As for Will Smith, I watched Concussion. I do not feel his performance was worth any nomination. His performance in it was far better than his performance in After Earth and Ali, but not one to deserve the award. He is amazingly talented and when the right role comes along, he will get one. But before everyone jumps all over the racism train regarding his Oscar snub, let's remember that he WAS nominated for Ali, so it's not like he's being passed over for jobs or being snubbed or deprived of work because of the color of his skin. The same thing goes for many of his roles. I like how Chris Rock reminded us it's not like Will is suffering. Will got paid $20million for that craptastic movie Wild Wild West. A movie that Will didn't want to take on originally because he felt the public wouldn't accept him in the role, because the public wouldn't accept any actor who wasn't white in that role. Not true. People went to see it. It wasn't panned because of his casting. It was a bad script. Period.

Bravo for realizing your own prejudices. To quote you,

So, after all is said and done, people hear, by and large, what they want to hear.
Hear your own words here. The ONLY reason I even titled my OP as "white girl here" was because I was tired of the complaints from the audience who watched and hated the Oscars for addressing the elephant in the room all night. I love how the Academy handled it! In fact, it was one of the most enjoyable recent Academy Award ceremonies in years. I didn't say "white girl here" to jump Will Smith or anybody else's case over the color of their skin. Chris Rock also touched on the problem with everyone trying to be too PC. That interviewers weren't supposed to ask what women are wearing anymore. They were encouraged to ask more. And that instead of having separate categories for best actor and actress, it should be one. I agree!!! Separate but equal never worked for anyone.

Maybe if you hear what people are trying to say instead of what you want to hear, you'd understand them a little better and not project your own feelings on to them.

The Oscars, whether or not you set any credence by them, are seen as a celebration of talent and an indication of worth in all areas of the film industry. As such, they are very important for people within the industry. Everyone wants one. Just being nominated is a high accolade. They're also seen, by the general public, as an indication of talent and worth.

The Oscars/Academy can only assess 'talent' and 'worth', when judging what the film industry produces. And what the film industry produces is, by and large, 'the white man's world'. If Jada Smith boycotted the Oscars just because Will Smith wasn't nominated, then she needs, in my opinion, to grow up. But, I'm not sure that was the case. By taking the stance they have, the Smiths have drawn people's attention towards the unfairness within the the film industry. There is a lack of opportunity for black people, in all categories, to showcase their talent.

What better way is there to get attention, than by boycotting what is seen as the most prestigious award ceremony? In Britain, Emily Davison threw herself under the king's horse, in order to gain attention for the suffragette movement. She wasn't annoyed about horse-racing!

The Smiths haven't done anything. The people who showed up, made a joke, made fun of the Smiths and their woe is me feelings, then explained what the minorities really want brought it to everyone's attention. They did it right.

Much like the riots vs the sit-ins for real racism. Who do you think accomplished more for equal rights? The rioters and looters who acted out when they were fed up? Or the people who dressed up properly and sat there, banding together and refusing to move?

Bravo to the people who attended the awards. Bravo to them for not only respecting their fellow professionals, but for courageously getting their point across the RIGHT way, in a venue, where people would tune-in and listen.

Oh, you are so wrong. The fact that you are still replying; people have been scrutinising the film industry, the Oscars etc. lends the lie to that assertion.

To avoid the whole ceremony going 't!ts up', there was a perfectly weighted levity about the whole proceedings, thanks to Chris Rock. He just 'skinned the cat' a different way. But, the Smiths let the cat out of the bag!

You're equating boycotting an award ceremony with rioting!? You're a strange individual. Bravo to the Smiths, who actually made the point in the first place.

reply

Sorry. I would've replied sooner, but I was too busy traveling while other people sit behind their computer screens, doing nothing with their lives.

Has Will or Jada been on any interviews lately? No.

What's their upcoming work look like? Yeah.

What about the work of those who did show up? Much better than the Smiths!

Split hairs and argue about something and get nothing done. It's people like you the Smiths were counting on to support them. Sitting back and angrily posting online does nothing. Arguing does nothing. Keep doing what you're doing. It works for me ;).

Travelling is something I love. I'm going to Chicago in May and the south of France at the end of June. I was skiing in Austria last month. I've been to every continent except for Antarctica - I'll not bore you with the details.

Bottom of my page three of comments - October 13th 2015.
Bottom of your page three - December 29th 2015.

Which means you have written the same number of comments, in 77 fewer days. But, I spend too long on the computer? And by your own admission, you've been on holiday and taken a break!

I'm not angry, but you appear to be so. I'll stop arguing with you, it seems to hurt you too much and you're not very good at it. Bye.

I agree with you. I was looking forward to Chris Rocks monologue all week, and he nailed it 100%!!!! Jada's boycott was ridiculous because, as Rock points out, she wasn't even invited! Period. Point. Blank. Who does jada think she is??!!

Just because there were no black nominees this year, doesn't make the Academy racist. The Academy doesn't have to fill a racial quota each year. It's based on talent and politics. It's been like that for YEARS!! Not everything has to do with race. The nominations this year DESERVED their nominations, regardless of race.
