What were your middle school days like? What years?

Seeing trailers for this movie, and I know I'm an old guy of 27 but I'd like to ask.

Technically started middle school in 7th grade at the Jr./Sr. High because we used to have a grade 4-6 Intermediate school until they built a Middle School which opened when I was a Freshman, so then the Jr./Sr. High became just the High School. Had I been born a year later I would've went to the new school just for 8th grade. Started 7th grade in September 2001 (yes less than a week before 9/11) and ended 8th grade in June 2003.

My cousin went to Catholic school and it was the same for her--she went to a 7th/8th grade Catholic Jr. High. Unlike when my mom and dad and aunts/uncles grew up going to Catholic grade school in the 60s/70s--they were in the same school from kindergarten to 8th grade.

Anyway, I cringe when I look at pictures of myself as a 12-13 year old. I had the stupidest hairdo, glasses (which I still have but nicer frames) and braces and like most kids at the age, my body was going through a lot of changes. My nose was HUGE and I had thick bushy eyebrows. Plus I was starting to get a mustache and my dad hadn't taught me how to shave yet. I also used to put washable yellow highlights in my hair. I thought I looked soooooooo cool.  My mom got it for me at some store in the mall. I think it was Trade Secret. My hair would be hard as a rock when I put it in. I also used to glob that green Clubman hair gel in my hair.

I will never forget one day I was waiting for my older sister after school (she was a sophomore when I was in 7th) and these high school guys came up to me and called me a nerd, because of my glasses and braces. Jerks. They wouldn't dare do that today because I lift weights and I'm much better looking now, probably way better looking than them. They were most likely insecure about their own selves and took it out on an innocent dorky 7th grader like me.

In 7th grade these girls would "flirt" with me and I didn't know how to react, I just kind of ignored them. When I was in 8th grade I really wanted them to notice me but they had moved on. I thought I had a crush on one of them (couldn't stop looking at her in the cafeteria and I think she knew . . .) but looking back I didn't really know the definition of "crush." I still didn't know everything about sex just yet, and what every 12/13 year old boy first starts to do when they get excited. Yes I started having adult dreams at that point, and learned about them in 8th grade health class. I remember in 7th grade I joined a group with some of my male classmates and it was with one of the male counselors and we talked about sexual intercourse. I sort of freaked out and told my dad how disgusting it sounded but he said it wouldn't be disgusting if I was an adult and in a loving relationship. I had the original Sims game which required the couples to make out over and over until a box popped up asking if they should have a baby (and I had the expansion pack that had the heart shaped bed). So I knew it required a man and a lady to make a baby but I thought it was just making out. lol. And yes, even as a 12 year old I knew babies didn't magically appear in a cloud of colorful smoke.

Also my old band teacher loves telling me this story of how he substituted for my Jr. High band teacher one day, and how I was nervous because the high schoolers were in the band room during my lesson and I wasn't crazy about the music, and I kept puffing my cheeks so he squeezed my cheeks. And my 2 other friends in my same section just looked at the teacher like "wtf?"  And he offered to drive me home because there was a really bad thunderstorm and I always walked, and I like, freaked out.

I come from the Philippines, where there is just grade school and high school, and where high school feels like middle school and college is just a specialized high school in essence if you study in a smaller college, albeit slightly better, especially since they actually teach you to do your taxes in senior year. (It's changing though, because they're splitting high school in two parts: junior high and senior high. The latter is when you're in your late teens, but this junior-senior thing just started this school year.) I remember that being 12 was a lot better than being 13. I started puberty at roughly 10, and I guess there were hints when my voice cracked at 8 and I started getting boners at 8 too, but they weren't caused by sexual thoughts yet. I experienced the fun parts of puberty first at 10, if you know what I mean. The last few months of being 12 was when I started having teen angst, and for me at 20, it hasn't ended because up until recently, I was living a dead-end life where I was being made fun of at 19 for the same reasons that got me made fun of at 13. (I graduated college at 19 because they put me ahead because I could already read at 3. If I weren't put ahead, I'd have graduated at 20.)

my middle school was like "Dangerous Minds" meets "High School high" meets "187". Yeah there were lots of kids from the projects who went to my school, actually like 80% of the school were kids from the projects, and not the good kind. It was 2002-2004 so i have lots of fond memories of it. A kid even brought a knife to school and cut another kid in the face with it, yeah middle school was hardcore, everyday was like an episode of "oz", it was awesome.
