Is fame really this funereal? (Spoilers)

When the guy leaves all sad for NYC in a black sedan at the end (not so subtle hearse symbolism), it just kind of finalized the black and white mindset of this film. Fame is bad. It will strip you of your soul. Best to stay mildly content and poor.
