Miles in the bedroom

When I watched this in theaters, the idiots behind me made a comment during the scene where Miles (Mike Birbiglia) says "my room isn't too big but neither am I" for the second time. They gasped and said something like "What a jerk." The thought this was him using a lame line to get her into bed with him, but I kind of disagree. I feel like since he works as a comedian, he has his jokes and things that he can say in situations saved up just to make people laugh. Not in a womanizing way.

I'm just curious what other people think. Am I wrong?

Also, I call them idiots, not because of this comment, but because they talked through the whole thing and never had anything smart to say.

I'm sorry you had rude idiots in your theater.

I think this was supposed to show that Miles was a loser who used the same lame lines with all the women he brings there.

I agree with you that it was a stock joke for him - and to his credit, as a double entendre it is funny. I also think though that it was a way to deflect the shame he may have felt when showing his place to someone for the first time. It makes plain his lack of success.

Yes, you nailed it.

It's disrespectful to use the same line (intentionally) with someone in such a personal situation. It's not like a pick up line where you don't know the person. If you've gotten to the stage where you're going to be intimate, you should speak in the moment, not from rehearsed lines.

However, these are my personal feelings.. someone who sleeps around a lot might not attach the same importance to the moment, and I believe the filmmaker was actually trying to show that about Miles.

Think it's supposed to be kind of ambiguous, to be misinterpreted by her. I agree with your read, but I think the point was it was a line that was supposed to be misread, to show how socially awkward he really was.

We all have those stock bits we fall back on when we're nervous.
