A little over-hyped, but still enjoyable...

Before watching this film, all I heard about is how disturbing and bloody it was. But I can definitely confirm that it's really not that disturbing. Trust me, I've seen much worse. This film is tame in comparison to some other films out there.

Despite the film not being that disturbing, I still found it to be a really enjoyable movie. The leading actress did a terrific job at portraying a cannibal. Maybe this movie received so much hype, all due to the topic of cannibalism. In fact, that was the only part of the movie that let me down a bit. I was expecting more brutal and 'raw' cannibal scenes. I thought the acting, the cinematography, especially the score, the setting, and the whole atmosphere of the film was kind of hypnotic and thrilling. I was also a little disappointed in the outcome of the characters at the end. I just expected something more. Though, I thought the final ending scene was pretty memorable.

Little? The director must have failed her "Horror 101" class at the film school, and few other classes too. These days I'm becoming more and more convinced that the film schools should be overturned into shopping malls.

A horror movie is not a fairly disjoint set of obscene and gory scenes where practically everybody is a prick to the point that it requires some serious suspension of disbelief, and it is particularly bad when it shows that this is being done as an end in itself. John Waters already did this better in the 70s - it was funnier and has the perks of being early in this game.

Lazy and incompetent writing that especially shows in the dynamic between the two sisters and practically everybody else. After the lulling first 30-40 minutes the movie picks up some steam but plateaus immediately and your "More! More!" barely feels satisfied at the end. They call it an art movie for some reason. If that is so, art really cheapened these days. The very ending was eyerolling: "Are you serious?! Is this how you gonna end on me?!"

Some of the things I liked are the lead's performance, the finger scene, the old school main theme and few other good songs (it is always fun to listen edgy songs sung in French). The idea is also good but I feel that I have seen it better done in other movies.

5/10
