Why didn't they abandon the submarine?
One of them tried to open the hatch, but he was stopped by the others, why didn't they try to swim to the surface?

Why not, there are people who freedived even to a depth of 200 meters, I'm pretty sure at least some of them could have held their breath for a few minutes until they would have reached the surface. share
But those freedives are done under very controlled circumstances. These guys were under a huge amount of stress and running out of oxygen. Just imagine the panic when they'd open the hatch and they would have to wait for the sub to be filled with water before they could even start to swim to the surface.
I'm no expert on this matter but I highly doubt they could have made it.
They are under pressurized air conditions in the Sub. If you surface too fast, gas bubbles will form in your blood and you will die an extremely painful death (the bends). Scuba divers going to that depth have to return to the surface in gradual steps to avoid the bends. Free divers that go down to deeper than 400, 500 ft are not breathing compressed air, so they don't have to worry about it.
