This movie shouln't be made

Ok, so I'm not trying to talk *beep* about faith based movies, if you wanna watch those movies and people wanna make those movies and they make money, fine. I have no problem with faith based movies. Are some of them silly? Yeah, a lot of non-faith based movies are silly too. But, that being said, Columbine was an incredible tragedy. So many young lives were lost because two unstable young men finally lost it and took out the horror that was in their minds on their classmates. If you wanna make a Columbine movie, a real Columbine movie, with lots of research, lots of in depth research into the people involved, a lot of research into Harris and Klebold and their mental states, awesome, do that. I would love to see a film about this tragedy. But to drag religion into this, more that it already has been dragged into it, is kind of disgusting to me. I'm a Christian, I believe in God. But I don't believe in the bible or what it stands for, and in some aspects I don't believe Jesus was as powerful as we are told. But, I'm not one of those religious people who shoves my faith in everyones face and makes it a huge deal. To drag religion into a tragedy and use it as a backdrop for a movie about said tragedy is disgusting and ignorant and it shows the filmmakers have no respect for the lives lost and the victims families.

You couldn't be more right, man. Cheers.

This is a true story, so we know how it ends.

Miss Scott kept a journal before her death, and attended school and interacted with the pair who would eventually take her life. She, through her writings, and her family are eye witnesses to what happened. A story can be told through, her eyes, of the events that led up to this tragedy.

Does it have to be "dragging religion into" it? I saw the trailer and was encouraged that it could be a movie with broad appeal, beyond the Christian community. We will see later how the entire movie plays out. I get the impression from the trailer that we will see this teen girl, who was a faithful Christian, observing the world around her. We can see how her faith affects how she lives and how she interacts with fellow students, who treat her both kindly and rudely.

There was another movie based on a real-life shooting that really touched me titled "Amish Grace." A guy snapped and shot dead several Amish school girls before committing suicide. It did not "push" religion, didn't try to convince people they should be Amish or Christian or whatnot, but instead showed how these people's faiths directed their lives in the face of tragedy - and it wasn't always smooth and easy. A mother had to learn to forgive and to treat the wife and children of the murderer with compassion, as they were just as much victims as she was - and then to convince her skeptical peers that it was the right thing to do.

The Bible says, "They will know we are Christian by our love." We can have a movie that show Christians loving, even in the face of adversity.

reply

But they are dragging religion into the shooting. The trailer explicitly states that "[Rachel Scott] was murdered for her faith in Jesus. Multiple factors played a role into Eric and Dylan's motivations, but it is still unclear what truly set them off. Portraying them this way would only alienate more people outside of the Christian community.

reply

Many victims, I'm sure different reasons. Evidently the bullying provoked them. There is evidence that they did ask at least Miss Scott about her faith before killing her. (the guy sitting beside her survived and was a witness).

One's faith is a part of life for many of us. Movies can be made which show faith in some people's lives, and not in others.

reply

Her best friend Sara said that Rachel Kept her faith very private and she as a very close friend didn't even know of her faith so there is no way the shooters knew. it's bs and her hair was cut very short for a theater role and could not be pulled...very short and Eric shot her from a distance.

and the Scotts were so sure they were talking about their Rachel when Eric and Dylan called a Rachel "godly whores who sit in the back in class" and they mentioned a Jen with Rachel. Well, if you check their Psychology class roster for 1999 there are A Rachel Baker and a Rachel Goodwin and a Jen Grant in their class. Not everything evolved around their Rachel. Idiots. Here is the class roster
http://www.acolumbinesite.com/rosters/epsychology.gif

and I don't trust Richard's half ass stories, he changed his story more times than people go through a fast food joint. Many times he said he shot at both of them from a distance and never said a word so Richard's change in story means crap to me... and Rachel's best friend Sara said she didn't even know Rachel was a Christian, so the shooters didn't know if she didn't...and Eric shot her only from a distance, didn't touch her and her hair was short like a man's so there was no way Eric pulled it or even got that close to her.

the only thing this movie got right was about the shooters being bullied. I hope they don't show Rachel reaching out to them because that never happened...She didn't even look at Dylan when he was doing the lights in theater , so it's good anti bullying but to try and make this girl into a saint and martyr is BS. and she didn't die for her faith.

reply

Yes but, what was her hair like?

reply

So much for Jesus saves. Oh well, if people want to make these movies, that's fine. Others are just as entitled not to watch them.

I only came to this discussion to see just how genuine this story may be about the tragedy. Evidently, not so much.

========================================
They died because ... it's in the script, now shut up.

Congrats to being the only person on here giving this film a positive view. I think this looks awful and it is propaganda. Rachel kept her faith to herself. She was never asked about her faith by the shooters. Only one person was asked their faith and it wasn't Rachel. That one person who was asked. Was shot BEFORE being asked about faith. So the shooters didn't target christianity. They weren't atheists. They grew up in the church.

This movie is garbage. Not only is it distasteful and dishonest but it looks corny as hell with fake actors

reply

Ok that's crap. Brooks Brown who wrote a memoir about the shootings knew her and knew she was a Christian; the boys shot her first because her positive attitude in general probably infuriated them. She didn't have to be a virtual missionary for people to know she was a Christian and you don't generally keep that faith private/

reply

She was a Christian but she was not shot because she was Christian. That is a lie. That is where the propaganda is. That is where its wrong

reply

No, she wasn't shot bc she was. But she was mocked because of it. They didn't just shoot her, they knocked her down and demanded an answer.

reply

not only does the acting look cringy but the concept is awful. it seems to be taking away multiple factors including that of mental health and making it seem as if the shooters main motives were religion based and based on the want to simply kill those that believed in god. This movie is gross to the actual complexities of the event and i really hope to see it tank and get the awful reviews it looks to be deserving of.

reply

First of all, most movies are based on tragedies or some epic event in history. From almost every war to the sinking of the Titanic, academy award winning movies have been made. Tragedy is life and it can help us to consider who we are and how we might respond. Secondly, while any movie based on reality will have those who saw things differently, the accounts of this movie are based on first hand accounts. Finally, if you call yourself a Christian how can you not believe the Bible? That term actually comes from the Bible, as does what we know about Jesus. Not sure how one calls himself a Christian but discounts the very source that defines what it means to be a Christian.

reply

No one is against sad films being made, or even films based on real events.

People commenting have said that it's the misinformation, the tackiness and the exploitation of the film that's making them sick to their stomachs.

reply

How can you be a christian and not to believe in the Bible and in Jesus? I really don”t get it.

reply

" I'm a Christian, I believe in God. But I don't believe in the bible or what it stands for, and in some aspects I don't believe Jesus was as powerful as we are told."

A Christian that doesn't believe in the Bible? So...what kind of Christian are you? Just curious. To me, that's like saying, "I'm an atheist, but I do believe in the Bible."

"But, I'm not one of those religious people who shoves my faith in everyone's face and makes it a huge deal. "

Okay, that's you. Welcome to a diverse world in which not everyone thinks and acts as you do. Some people like to share their beliefs and philosophies. The fact that people are so touchy about hearing the word "God" or hearing someone say "Jesus" seems rather insecure to me. Boo hoo.

"To drag religion into a tragedy and use it as a backdrop for a movie about said tragedy is disgusting and ignorant and it shows the filmmakers have no respect for the lives lost and the victims families."

I think the film focuses on Rachel Scott. It's her story, and she happened to be very religious. If someone thinks her life is a story worth telling, I don't see the problem. I suspect lot of people wouldn't have a problem with this if she hadn't been religious and had been some secular, humanistic, liberal or whatever.

We get plenty of preaching from Hollywood. Seems like some people simply want to have their beliefs validated and get all upset that somebody, out there in the world, dares preach something they don't agree with! How insecure! At least, that's how I see it.

Its possible for someone to believe in the overall message of Christianity without believing that the Bible is a factually accurate portrayal of Christianity.

For example a number of evangelical and fundamentalist Christians believe in a strict interpretation of the Bible, it is basically the ultimate authority of what Christianity means. This is the root of why they're members of the Protestant faith rather than Catholic, Orthodox, etc.

The Catholic faith, by way of contrast, believes that the doctrine passed down within the Church is more important, and when there is a conflict between the two the Church is correct and the Bible is wrong. The Church, in effect, guides the congregation towards what their shared view of Christianity is.

I honestly don't mean to offend any Catholics with this gross oversimplification of your faith, I just wanted to show that multiple Christian faiths can interpret their adherence to the Bible differently, so someone who believes in doctrine alone without adherence to the Bible at all is certainly within the realm of possibility.

Personally, I think that all "true life" stories are pretty much made up fluff pieces and this one sounds no different than the rest. If someone interprets those movies as the truth then they're a sad human being.

reply

"Its possible for someone to believe in the overall message of Christianity without believing that the Bible is a factually accurate portrayal of Christianity."

Yeah..no. Where do you think Christianity came from?

reply

Exactly! It's like saying "It's possible to believe in the overall appearance of Kim Kardashian's butt without believing that it represents a factually accurate portrayal of plastic surgery. Nope, that butt is the inspired word of a plastic surgeon!

reply

agreed, the guy is not Christian

also, it's a movie not a documentary. It's also based on Rachel Joy Scott's diary, she happened to be Christian. This has nothing to actually do with religion.

The first and final lines of your post were completely unnecessary. Replies like yours serve ZERO purpose and have no effect (other than making yourself feel high and mighty). It would have been fine, but you just had to throw in those stupid insults to make it a textbook internet response. You must be a real treat to be around.

Was this the purpose of you creating an IMDB account? You created it 5 days ago which is when you posted this and haven't done anything since. Looks like a major nerve was struck with you.
