Disney has always done that. The eyes are a traditional Disney thing. Big, colorful eyes gave Bambi a human quality that we can sympathize with. Zazu basically looks like a guy with a big nose. The mice in Cinderella have human features.
You are not wrong. But its what they have always done in Disney animation.
