Quite bland

Bland and forgettable.
No passion/chemistry between Mary and Frank.

Agreed! And the overreacting (or poor directing) of Louis Scatcherd was difficult to watch.
I wasn't a big fan of Downton Abbey because it was more show than substance. By comparison watch the wonderful Parades End. But Dr. Thorne had a totally predictable plot with 2-dimensional characters at best. It made Downton seem deep in comparison. I hope Julian Fellowes gives his audience more credit in the future.

A wonderful summation of this wretched production; you succinctly address all the salient points perfectly. I also agree with your take on the relatively recent adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's Parades End; it is truly superb!

I couldn't get past 20 minutes of Parades End, and I had high hopes. I really enjoyed Doctor Thorne, however, with no initial expectations of it being good. I've not read the book or books so I guess I might have had more criticism had I done so

I have to agree. The plot and the characters were very stereotypical with little or no conflict and it was obvious that Mary was going to end up with the hero and the money - although in those days she would have lost the lot if she had married him !!
A fairy tale.

I really enjoyed "Doctor Thorne". I only wish it had been longer.
