$20 Million Budget?

I usually don't care about budgets. If a film is entertaining, I don't care if it cost $100 Million or $1 million. Especially when it's on Netflix where my cost is set per month.

But whoever green lit this at Netflix, you got robbed. This film looked like it cost $2 Million. Where was the $20 Million spent? None of these actors command ANY serious money. The sets, costumes & music were marginal at best.

Were there a few laughs? Yes. but this was nowhere near the greatness levels of THIS IS SPINAL TAP and BEST IN SHOW.

What was the joke Chris Rock said about the original BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? "The budget was $50,000? I saw the film. Someone's walking around with $49,000 in their pockets." Same here. $20 million? Someone (Guest) is walking around with $19 Million.

I don't pretend to understand how money is spent on movie productions because I am not a movie producer.

You should try to be more like me.

We thought we lost you. Welcome back.

Agreed, why would you possibly care?

As I said, I don't usually, but I care, in this case, because I work in the film business. When a $3 million film costs $20 million it makes it hard on other productions in the future. Because when a film will genuinely NEED $20 Million, they won't be able to get it because they'll look back on films like MASCOTS and just believe the money won't be going on the screen.

Budgets matter. Sorry, they do.

When a $250 Million budget film fails, people lose jobs, fewer original films get made. When Joe Roth was running Fox, he was famous for taking profits from HOME ALONE & green-lighting smaller films that normally wouldn't get made like RAISING ARIZONA & NAKED LUNCH.

This $20Million expense probably won't hurt Netflix. They probably wanted a "Christopher Guest" film and didn't mind over-paying. But as Netflix refines its business model & gets more selective, they're going to start cracking down.
