Struggled getting thru it

I'll be up front (not including Spinal Tap) I still think Waiting for Guffman was the peak for Chris Guest's faux-docs. I know most people go for Best in Show and even though I enjoyed that, I still think I laughed more in Guffman. But with each subsequent film the laughs got fewer and fewer (for me.) I can't recall one bit from A Mighty Wind that remains in my memory. And For Your Consideration was really disappointing. Which brings me to Mascots.... I'm sorry to say but oh how the mighty have fallen. Everyone seems like they're on autopilot in this. What was once fresh is now stale. Even the appearance of Corky from Guffman can't save things. I read a review that really hit the nail on the head whereas the subject matter in this is so goofy and over the top to begin with that it hampers the comedy. His other films all took on subjects that were ripe for making fun of. Making fun of mascots is like shooting fish in a barrel to borrow that old phrase.

I honestly wanted to like this and expected at least a handful of laughs. But they're just not there.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!!

Don't worry, it wasn't bad. Struggling to get through it is a huge overstatement.

This one started slow, but got funnier as it went on. I'm looking forward to repeat viewings and noticing the intricacies I know are there (and that I missed the first time).

As far as Mighty Wind - sorry that subtle (and plenty of not so subtle) humor blew over your head. Watch it again - you might find it's just as good if not better than Guffman.

reply

nope sorry the "subtle" humor of A Mighty Wind didn't fly over my head at all. It's just not that funny of a picture. I think Mascots was just lazy. Like I said it felt like everyone was on autopilot. Guest is capable of much, much better than this.

He hasn't been very successful outside these faux-docs although I would argue The Big Picture is a better take on Hollywood than For Your Consideration ever could hope to be. Would be nice if he maybe gave these type of films a rest and attempt something a little more challenging to his creativity.

OP, me too. Just watched it kept waiting for it to get better. The mockumentary format is a little stale now, but I think it still would have been good, if the subject was better and it was actually funny. Not. The actors were mostly good (especially Christopher Guest and the rest who have been in his previous films) but it failed to make me laugh once. Hope this is not his swan song; I love all of his previous efforts (some more than others, but still)

Christopher Guest's career has been one of diminishing returns. But he set the bar so high with Waiting for Guffman that even "diminishing returns" have been (to some degree) excellent.

The problem with Mascots is we've been trained to listen to those mini-monologues expecting a real zinger at the end of each one. Something that cracks you up as they cut to another scene. Mascots had few of them.

I also found that it lost my attention in several places. 5/10

For me, his magnum opus was Best in Show. Guffman was great too, and I have to disagree with you about A Mighty Wind. Many, many great scenes in that one. How can you not laugh when you see Jennifer Coolidge's "hum", or the sheer look of panic on John Michael Higgin's face when he realizes he has to "Yes and..." after Jane Lynch's WINC offer? So good.

That said, Mascots was ultimately a dud for me as well. I loved seeing the alumni back together, but can't help but wonder how much great material wound up on the cutting room floor, if any did at all.

Agreed. Guffman is the pinnacle ... but I feel biased saying that because I grew up in a Blaine, Missouri-esque town and he captured it perfectly.

Best in Show is cute and the dogs are sweet and Guest is a bit more loving with those characters.

A Mighty Wind isn't as memorable but some of their songs were great -- one ('A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow') was even nominated for an Oscar making Michael McKeon is an Oscar nominee!!

And as for 'For Your Consideration': For the most yes, yes, yes ... exactly what you said EXCEPT for Catherine O'Hara's pre-nomination/post-surgical performance. She was genius as she did it ALL on her own. She was picking up a lost of Oscar buzz herself for this performance and I do believe she missed out. Snub.

As for Mascots -- I just couldn't understand it. These are Guest's most thinly-written characters ever and the characters end up being worn instead of the mascot costumes. I didn't understand who these guys were or why this was supposed to be funny. When Corky made his appearance, it didn't even feel like him ... it was a knock-off. THIS Corky didn't seem like he'd own a 'My Dinner with Andre' lunchbox.

I did laugh loudly a few times at random dialogue here and there (early on) but once the central competition got underway I lost interest and couldn't understand what Guest was focusing on with these people.

I was disappointed ... seriously, WHY mascots?

The only really funny part was the fist routine. There were some other minor chuckles in there of subtleties, but that was about it.
