Anyone seen it? why the low rating :(

Rating is 5.4 but the trailer looks Terrifying! I wouldn't normally care about scores on IMDB but another horror movie that looked awesome and scary as well "The hallow" 2015 also known as "the woods" had a 5.2 rating which I ignored. The movie really sucked unfortunately haha!

Was wondering is anyone that has seen Baskin had a opinion of the film???

Its coming out next month, so Im sure its going to leak online after that. Most foreign films actually leak faster than US domestic ones. So fingers crossed.

Anyone find it yet?

Fingers crossed that the film leaks online, so you can watch it illegally and deprive the filmmakers of income. You should be so proud of being a thief.

I'm sure it's a lot better than its IMDB rating. I've read severs positive reviews for it. Though horror will always remain divisive.

Film, like all art, is subjective. I remember plenty of times when I read a review and it was positive but when I saw the film I thought it was ehhhh ok at best. So you cant really go by score or reviews, the only persons opinion that should really matters is yourself. But in saying that, if a film a low score from every single media outlet and reviewer than odds are its terrible.

I have high hopes for the film and cant wait to see it.

reply

That is very true. There appear to be 4 reviews up now on Rotten Tomatoes, 3 good and 1 negative. It'll be interesting to see the reception closer to its release date.

reply

That's why IMDb score is an average. Some people like it a lot and some not at all. The ratio is about 50/50.

Since no one actually answered the OP's question yet, it's clear that the film made little lasting impression at its film fest screenings, and since I actually saw it at the TIFF premiere last year, here's a few thoughts about why:

It's BOOOOORRRRRIINNNG. Evrenol has definite visual chops, but absolutely nothing that distinguishes him from several other "gritty" horror (or torture horror) directors who've come and gone from the scene in the past decade. The film has a nice feeling of unease for the first act, but when the cops finally reach "Hell" -- or whatever it is -- the pace just slows to a crawl while Evernol treats us to a tiresome slog through his version of "hell" which is little more than a parade of freakish, grotesque performers and barely-skin-deep gore that has virtually no point beyond its own existence, set to a droning soundtrack that can put you to sleep, and then The End.

As a calling card, it MIGHT get him more horror work, but only because a few fest programmers saw some merit in it as a midnight show, not because it significantly shakes up the genre, which it absolutely does not.

I gave it a 5 out of 10, because I've seen better AND worse horror shows than this in just about equal measure.

It's because it's not a great film. It's OK, but doesn't seem to know where it's going with the story. Then there's a rather pointless gore/torture bit for the last 20 mins.

As others have said, the film is unfortunately lacking in story. Horror is a genre that can get some very divisive opinions, and I am sure this film will end up being loved by some, and hated by others. It LOOKS good, in style, camerawork and visuals, but it lacks a story. I like my movies to have much more plot than this. I didn't hate it, but I definitely left feeling like it failed at entertaining me for an hour and a half. I hope his next movie is better.

By the way, I like The Hallow much more for the story, but overall it still failed at entertaining me as well. Although some people disagree with me, I would check out the Southbound anthology that came out this past year, that was far better than both of these.

the film visually (cinematography) is great and it started out ok but as others have said the storyline is meh...and the last 20 or so minutes of torture scenes were lame (although the shot of the spider crawling out of the guy's mouth as he lay dead on the floor was wonderful and freaky). i didn't even understand the final scene where the survivor guy, who was original in the police van, is then hit by the same van....

just saw it. this was boring as hell and intentionally annoyingly weird. it had a couple of unintentionally comical scenes as well. had to laugh a couple of times. i gave it 2/10, with the second point only added, because of the final scene.
